Im landing at Newark late May with 4 days to kill and no plans made yet. Any suggestions please, that don't involve Manhattan

Bit of a vague question without knowing what things interest you and what transport you can use!

You could spend 2 full days touring Brooklyn. Let me know if you're interested in more detailed info on the borough of my birth.

You could easily spend a day in the Bronx touring the Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and the Arthur Ave area. That's good for an exhausting full day.

Four other boroughs of the City, heck each has their own Zoo if you are into that.
As asked, what are your interests?

Second Brooklyn. The weather should be beautiful, so recommend checking out waterfront parks Brooklyn Bridge Park and newly opened Domino Park and exploring their adjacent neighborhoods (DUMBO and Williamsburg respectively). Maybe even go to the NYC Transit Museum (a favorite of mine).

These two food tours are great, if you're into that:
World?s Fare Food Tours | Chopsticks and Marrow
Scott's Pizza Tours | New York City Guided Pizza Tasting & Historical Bus and Walking Tours (NYC, NY)

You could also explore upstate a bit - DIA Beacon, Storm King Art Center and the Woodbury Outlets are all stone's throw away.

Do you want to stay in NY? If not, I'd take the train to DC for a couple of days - quite a contrast to Manhattan, and lots of free museums etc.

Finally worked out where my original post went to.:p

Philadelphia and Washington sound ideal for me.

Will Hollywood have rebuilt the White House by then ?

It does seem to suffer a lot of alien attacks

You could check out Atlantic City too as well as the Poconos
