Thinking about doing the same, how long did it take to get from T8 to T4 and back with security?

Seems expensive to go to Midtown. I arrive at 2:00 from Ohio and my friends arrive from Paris at 8:00 so I have to kill time before meeting them. I'll do more research as July nears, but is there anything mildly interesting closer to JFK to visit or eat dinner (early) while awaiting their arrival?

A possible form of "amusement", if you are a slot machine gambler, is Resorts World "CASINO" at Aqueduct (about 5 miles from JFK).
I do play slots, but have NEVER visited RW, their slots are Type II (AC and LV are Type III). It must have something nice, since it attracts lots of players.

That is very good to know, Jackal. I have searching for a while trying to find the TSA statement for this policy to have it in hand for a visit to T1 while flying out of T4.

If you have a link I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you!

I don't have a link and that post was a long time ago, so it's long lost to my browser history. I still know the policy to be 100% true, however, as I've taken advantage of it myself at many airports, and it's often reiterated here on FT.

Excellent. I'll use this to advantage at JFK tomorrow

Thank you!

No T1 for Me

No success in accessing T1 at JFK with a T4 BP the other week. The agent at the entry said T1 is privately owned and one may not access without a T1 BP. Access to all the other JFK terminals, however, is allowed.

that's good to know! I wanted to access the T1 lounge with a T8 boarding pass but I guess it won't work now.

Anyone else with experience?

That's hogwash. All of the terminals are owned by the Port Authority. They have different operators, but they're all PA-owned. Apparently, the operators of T1 and T4 aren't exactly on the best terms (fighting over who gets to expand into the space where T3 used to be, see link below), so that might be the issue.

I would ignore the private contract line dragon and just walk past them. They have no legal authority. Once you get up to the actual podium where a real TSA agent checks your BP and ID, they have no policy denying you access and so will let you through.

This is particularly challenging at JFK T1; they scan your BP to grant access to the lines. Good luck pulling it off.

You might be in the right, but I wouldn't pick that fight. Certainly not just to visit one of those lounges.

So maybe the following Wingtips lounge FAQ needs to be updated?

"Any guest from any airline and any class of service is welcome in the Wingtips Lounge. However, our lounges are post-security and guests must be departing from an airline that operates out of the terminal where Wingtips is located. In JFK, this is Terminal 4. In St. Louis, this is Terminal 2.”

Wonder if it's related to the fact that all T1 arriving flights need passport control such that T1 doesn't have an 'exit' like other terminals. Let me know if T1 actually has an exit - it's been too long since I've been there.

Theres an exit. If flight gets cancelled or passenger gets rebooked they need a way out.

They have no right or authority to prevent access. They don't own, but operate the terminal. As long as TSA is ok with it (which they are) you can get in. If agent insists ask TSA and they'll confirm. You could be there simply to shop. In which case the Terminals 1 Group wouldn't likely want to lose revenue.
