Very sad to see. Sarge's deli - which I actually preferred was also lost a short time before to a fire.

Seems like all the good Deli;s are closing. In Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale used to be Wolfies back in the 1970;s. Also they closed Rascal House on Collins in Sunny Isles a few years back.

It's not closed. I get lunch from there fairly often.

They are currently closed but expect to rebuild.

What I don't understand is why the Stage doesn't just move? 75 years and that's it? :(

One factor cited in the NYT article was spiraling rent so wouldn't that fixed cost be as high elsewhere?

Why? Second Ave Deli moved due to rent.

2nd Avenue Deli is in a completely different part of town. Stage was probably paying 3X as much in rent per month as 2nd Ave. Stage would have to move much further uptown (into the high 70s-low 80s, maybe higher) to get comparable space at a comparable rate.

In a manner of speaking. They moved because they didn't want to pay their rent. :D They were evicted for nonpayment.

Ahhh... I didn't realize the fire was so recent.

The issue with the 2nd Ave deli was STILL about rent as is the Stage. 2nd Ave deli, as was said upthread, also had rent disputes. Yet THEY didn't close shop even as they were EVICTED. (Didn't know about the eviction) They are in business and kept their 2nd Ave Deli name even though they are no longer even on 2nd Avenue. 2nd Ave Deli was in a much worse situation yet they are still in operation.

You just gave one option; they could have relocated uptown. They could have relocated elsewhere too. Sounds like they preferred to go out of business than to move. More business for the Carnegie Deli just a few blocks away.

Stage wasn't a fun place to eat at. Carnegie is a fun place. I'm guessing that business at Stage was off, way off.

They won't have that problem at the current location, the owners bought the whole building.
