Longish Layover
You should have time to see a few things. Take the Silver line to downtown and back to the airport. You can also take the Blue line to and from the airport. You can get off at aquarium and take a trolley tour of the city for a couple of hours to see the landmarks before you head back. In and out from the airport is 30 mins max. You can also hit the North End for seafood or Italian food or pizza. 15 minute walk from Aquarium station as is Faneuil Hall.

Thanks, cacic! That's a very big help. Don't want to sit around the airport all that time. Do you have an opinion how long it will take to get through immigration on the way out (coming from Canada), and security on the way back in?

Most flights from Canada pre-clear immigration in Canada, so unless you’re on one of the few flights that don’t, you’ll walk off the plane in BOS just like a domestic flight. And as long as you’re back at the airport an hour before your flight you’ll be fine.

it’s easier to give advice if we know your exact flights, but generally security doesn’t take longer than 20-30 minutes, and the walk from security to the gates usually is short.
