inexpensive travel fromo BDL (or Hartford) to New Haven

So without boring you w/ the details but May 12-13 I am flying into BDL but am taking a train from New Haven back home the next day. I'm getting (and returning) a car rental in New Haven but I need one way inexpensive transpo from either BDL or Hartford in general to New Haven. Any suggestions? BTW, I have friends in Hartford who could get me from BDL into Hartford if need be, neither of them are aval to take me to New Haven tho. Thanks for any thoughts for inexpensive options.

If you don't mind maybe being surrounded by Yale students, the University has these suggestions:

There are trains from Springfield/Hartford/BDL to New Haven on Amtrak at a pretty decent frequency. You'll find BDL is near the Windsor Locks Amtrak station and for less than $20 you can catch a train right into New Haven Union Station. There is a CT Bus from BDL to the Amtrak Station, but I did an uber the last time I was up there and it was about $10.

Rental cars can be very cheap at BDL. My preferred route to New Haven is to fly to BDL and rent a vehicle and then return it to BDL before flying out from there. It's relatively inexpensive and very convenient, typically with little traffic on good roads if you can avoid crossing through Hartford during rush hour.

Start by checking how much more it would cost to rent a vehicle from one of the majors at BDL and drop it off in New Haven or somewhere else with train convenient transportation. If you're creative and don't mind a bit of a hassle, you might find that a drop off at some place like EWR could be surprisingly cheap for your travel dates.

BTW, if this is near Yale graduation time, plan in advance and expect everything to be expensive and full.

thanks everyone. I went to undergrad in Hfd about 25 years ago and was mainly looking to see if any options had changed. I actually found o/w on Amtrak for about $12 so it's PERFECT and then I'll just rent a car at the NHV train station and return it there. thanks again for the replies!
