Fresh lobster is served at restaurants (that are open) year round. Some "pounds" close in the offseason, hence the parenthesis. It may not be local lobster from Maine waters at certain times of the year, but the lobster you eat will have been alive minutes before you ordered it.

Lobster can be fished year round, but the season usually shuts down around December since the lobsters are migrating out to deeper/colder water. That said, the fall is said to be the peak hardshell season, since all of the shedders now have new hard shells and start to head back out to the deep water. A lot get trapped on their way out.

Anyhow, plenty of pounds close in the late fall since they aren't getting the traffic to stay open, but you can expect lobster anywhere that it's normally served as long as the place itself is open. I can't speak to other parts of Maine, but if you're in the Portland area, it won't be a challenge to find lobster in mid-October.

It is most certainly Maine lobster if being sold in Maine, unless expressly identified as something else.

Or the location is facing a whopping fine.

Maine lobsters are available year round. Fewer lobstermen out there in mid-winter, but they go offshore and places such as Monhegan Island don't even start their season until December.

If you're coming to Portland, check out Eventide for all seafood (including my favorite lobster roll and fish sandwich). They also have great beers.

If you want an actual lobster dinner (steamed or roasted) I recommend Scales.

I will be out there this fall too. I just read about this place online since I was looking for fresh oysters. It sounds really good!

We just get back from Maine. Eventide is definitely our favourite Lobster roll by a mile. Bite into Maine is 2nd. Red's eat is overated IMHO.
