Harvard Club Downtown or Back Bay for dining?
I have a club membership which I can use on visits to Boston. I would like to take a few friends to dine with me at one of the above. Does anyone have suggestions? I think one is traditional and clubby while the other is a city club in a high rise building? Thanks very much.

I was going to write something snide about opting for a restaurant rather than the Harvard Club if you are interested in eating good food, but opted not to!

If the friends are inclined to be at all rowdy, I'd take them to a restaurant.

You've pretty much nailed it. The Back Bay clubhouse is "clubby," stone, dark wood paneling, etc. The Downtown Clubhouse is on the thirtysomethingth floor of an office building - some very nice views, most of the decor's still pretty clubby. I think the food's pretty comparable between the two (Veritas at the Back Bay and Crimson at the Downtown).

The food at both places is pretty mediocre. I would go for a drink or lunch but have dinner elsewhere. Back Bay is far more interesting than downtown anyway IMHO.

If you go to the Back Bay location, many of Boston's best restaurants are within walking distance. I'll throw out two ideas: Select Oyster Bar, for excellent elegantly casual seafood; and Sorellina, for high end fine dining Italian.
