Then stay a couple of days in midcoast Maine most likely in Boothbay Harbor. You can hit Wiscasset, Phippsburg (has Popham Beach, good local seafood restaurants, hiking into Morse Mountain/Beach), Sebasco Harbor Resort is another place to stay in Phippsburg.
Then drive up coast Rockland/Camden/Belfast and spend couple days there. You an certainly go the full way to Acadia, but it is crazy in August (as are most of the places I guess). |

Boothbay is a ferociously expensive tourist trap. I would get through the overcrowded, overpriced midcoast region as quickly as possible and get on up to Acadia. "Real Maine" is north/northwest of there. New Brunswick and the Bay of Fundy national park are also very nice.
Cheers. |

If you just follow the crowds, then yes, nothing real different. But if your local like I am and you know the places not mentioned anywhere, then it's a little different.

hairpeace......i'm no expert, but i definitely will give a +1 ^ for Acadia National Park! watching the sunset from the top of cadillac mountain (within the park) was breathtaking. people even bring champagne/picnic baskets to enjoy the show - definitely romantic and unforgettable........just make sure you get up there early enough, the drive is slow up to the top and you don't want to miss a second of it ;)

Better yet, watch sunrise atop of Cadillac. FAR fewer people and just spectacularly beautiful. The color of the sky...the sweetness of the air....it's the best. You just have to get up early. Why not. ^

I haven't been to Maine in at least 12 years and this thread has reignited my interest in going. Love the pictures and suggestions.

We very much like two areas; Blue Hill/Castine/Deer Island and Corea-Cutler. One just south of Acadia and one just north.
The reason I ask is very few people venture to Castine which is a bit out of the way. We go there for a couple of weeks every August. |

Have you ever been to Castine?

it sounds sweet, but depending on what day in august, she'd have to be at the top of the mountain by 4:30am! and i don't think i would ever suggest to drive up there in the dark, since you really need to watch where you're going. but that's just me...:D
Yes, you get up early but it's worth it. Then you drive down and go back to sleep if you like. :p |

I've done that drive several times. There are others on the road so it's not like anyone will drive off the mountain.

It's just not a big deal. I drove it for the first time when I was in my early 20s. But if people are scared of driving at night, then they shouldn't do it I guess. |
