Well, do you legitimately qualify for use of the code? If you do, then no, no reason not to--in fact, you should!
If you don't legitimately qualify for use of the code, though, then tread carefully. If something happens to the car, the rental company might do some investigation and pursue action against you for unauthorized use of a code. You might also have issues getting your credit card and/or auto insurance company to cover it, too.
Or you could get off scott-free. You never know. Just tread carefully.

Is there any place on the website that shows your tier progress?
Also, although 2 consecutive 1-way rentals will net 2 rental credits, what about a local + 1-way? Meaning, I rent a car from ABC, return it to ABC a day later then immediately pick up another car, and drop it off at DEF the next day?

Here's the explanation by our community director.
I am an outsider to what happened, but let me see if I can explain. Company attorneys came to Internet Brands (owner of FlyerTalk) some months back and asked that the list be removed. IB took the position that the codes were publicly available and were simply a compilation. FT members had collected them over many years. Different folks had organized them from time to time til quite a lengthy list evolved. Then their attorneys tracked down an FT member who was the last to maintain the compilation. They found him off FT. He has a website that has nothing to do with these codes. They sent him a note demanding that he remove the codes. He has no resources to respond. He took the appropriate step and asked that the compilation be removed. The then moderator complied and immediately resigned.
I am sorry that the resource is no longer here for members.

What is unexplained, and should not have happened, IMHO, is arbitrarily killing the whole, very lengthy thread which included a valuable history of other information totally unrelated to the "list" in question. Fine, kill the disputed "list," the first posting, but leave the thread intact. Again, IMHO, this could have been easily justified as the same kind of exchange as happens everywhere else on these forums -- merely members sharing their experiences and interactions with the various travel services we all deal with. Why was the whole thread quashed/censored??? Do members here have no say in the exchange of ideas/experiences?

It's hardly arbitrary, and doing what you suggest (leaving the thread intact without a code list) would not have solved the problem. And to frame the issue as one of we don't value members' contributions is not an accurate assessment either, because that is absolutely not true. We have taken no action to censor or otherwise modify users' experiences about National or the car rental process.
There are other ways to find the information which was contained in that thread which are still publicly accessible and discoverable. I'm going to leave it at that.

Again, fact is, the whole thread was quietly and ARBITRARILY zapped without notice, without discussion here. This was not some sort of minor clean-up to a little-used posting, it was an ACTIVELY updated part of this forum used by hundreds if not thousands of members here. The contributions of countless members were disregarded and trashed. It shouldn't have happened and says a lot about how this site might treat other user input going forward.
I'm going to leave it at that.
