Dad as additional driver, potential fee?
I searched the forums, but it seems most of the additional driver questions are related to spouses, which I understand are covered if the renter is an EC member.
I'm planning to take a family trip around Thanksgiving, and my dad and I will probably rotate on the driving. He's also an EC member. According to their T&C, "An Emerald Club member's spouse, immediate family member living with him/her, business partner, employer, or fellow associate who has an assigned corporate contract with National and drives the car for business purposes. All other additional authorized driver situations are subject to a daily charge. Click here for our policy on additional drivers." Now my dad is an immediate family member, but he's not living with me, since we have separate domiciles. And this isn't a corporate contract either. I presume I will get charged an additional fee- any idea how much it might be? |
I really don't think they should charge you for a direct family member such as your dad. I am pretty sure spouses are included most of the time at no additional charge..And how are they going to verify if he's in the same household? ..

Drivers license required to add additional driver. It's pretty obvious if the states are different (though the OP didn't specify whether they have the same address on their licenses or not).
And as gj83 said, we have to present the DL at the counter to register an additional driver. Well, I guess I'll see what they say. |
If you don't have to rent from National, there are other programs that will allow free additional drivers even if not your spouse. There are numerous codes (such as Costco and Walmart) for Alamo that allow any person as the additional free driver. Hertz allows all AAA members as free additional drivers if you use the AAA contract code. Avis allows all those who are insured through USAA as additional drivers if you use the USAA contract code. Best of luck -- Suzanne

The rate for Additional Drivers varies from State to State. If you have booked your res already. Go to nationalcar.com and hit the existing res area, and in the area where it discusses coverages, gps, etc it will also list the cost for additional drivers. You can also amend your res right there and add the info on your existing reservation. You still have to show up at the counter so his license can be verified...but it will speed things at time of arrival.
Additional driver fees generally run $6 to $10 per day. |
