If i change my reward prefernece to flyer miles, how is the reward calulated? is it based on $ value of the rental or a set number of miles?

Thanks

It was 50/day about a year or so ago, then I changed to rental credits. Also, all except NW, there was a 'tax' charge added if you took FF miles, something like $0.50/day.

NWA is doing 1000 bonus miles with a promotion on their website for the golf contest game.
NWA also does triple miles for elite members.
NWA also has 100,000 mile dash promotion for extra free miles based on partner/airline usage.

There is no 50-cent/day service charge added when National gives me AAdvantage miles.

As I understand it, if you choose to earn Northwest or American miles, you're charged a small surcharge to cover the federal tax that National pays for these miles. On a weekly rental, that tax might come out to about 40 cents. It's itemized on the bill as something like Fftxrsu.

That's a small price, but it's not a cost that I can bill to my company or clients. For my business rentals, I'm required to pay that fee out of pocket.

I only choose miles when there's a good mileage promo. If I were an infrequent renter, I'd also choose miles unless there's a special promo like 1-2-Free. (And even 1-2-Free is only worthwhile if you have plans to use the certificates for something that a regular coupon couldn't provide.)

On my next rental, I'm getting Northwest miles because of the current promo for 1000 bonus miles.

sc flier ~ reread your own link; NWA & AA are not charged. They list a handful who are.

Other misconceptions: The 1000 mile applies to your first rental within the promo period; subsequent rentals get 500 miles.

In normal times, NWA elites get 100 miles when the rental runs over a Saturday nite ~ I've seen that turn into 100/day, though the T&Cs don't read that way ^ All others settle for 50, no matter...

Interesting wrinkle: Inquired of NWA why they'd dis-associated from Hertz ~ reportedly Hertz wouldn't negotiate on (ie. eat) the fee; like, 50-cents on 250 miles? Sounds like a deal to me :D

How long does it take for the miles to post in my airline account? I see the rentals on line after 36 hours but after 3 weeks still no miles?

thanks

Sorry to report that NW and AA miles get another form of tax per the text at the bottom of that site:

The Frequent Flyer Tax Recoupment Surcharge (7.5% Federal Excise Tax on the cost of miles awarded at the time of rental) will remain in effect for qualifying rentals in the US when renters choose to receive miles from American and Northwest Airlines.

This charge makes getting FF miles impossible for me. My company won't pay it so if I take it I have to do a lot of exception work since I have to charge rentals to the corporate card.

I take the rental credit's

As an Emerald Elite, 5 rentals equals 1 free rental day. 40 rentals a year more than covers my personal rental needs.

I too had the same question. Also, do you need to have AA miles selected as your preference for these promos? I didn't find anywhere in the T&C of the AA promo that said you HAD to have miles selected.

pmaddock defended my statement correctly.

During my rental last week in LAS, I have the following included on my receipt:

FFTXRSU 0.29
Frequent Flyer credit has been sent to NORTHWEST AIRLINES for program number 999999999.

The base rate was $129.95 for the week. Frequent flyer tax of 29 cents. Other taxes ($18.85) and fees ($33.74) totaled $52.59.

When I expense this to my company, I'll have to deduct the 29 cents that I must pay out of pocket.

As the Northwest bonus miles offer is ending, I've switched back to earning rental credits rather than miles.
