split payment at National
has anyone tried to split the payment at National? There is a AMEX offer going and like to see if it's possible...

Not sure what you mean by "split payment" but there's no way to put a charge on multiple cards, if that's what you're asking. You can, however, change the card you pay for the reservation with even if you made the booking on a different car.

thanks for the info!
I thought it would be as simple as at the hotel...I guess that won't work |

Hold on there.... I have paid with 2 cards several times at the ORD Airport location. Th called the manager over and we went into the booth and he processed. I did get the impression this was not standard procedure. I also never asked elsewhere. It’s a bit of a hassle and it was messed up twice. I don’t bother anymore. Ymmv.

For reference -
Several weeks ago, I needed to extend my rental and wanted to switch my payment card midway though the reservation. Phone agent could not do it over the phone so I went to the airport. Airport system would not let them switch the card while the contact was still open either. Not sure if this is YMMV, but it might be that split payment can be done when the contract is opened and not midway through the contract. |
I'll report back in a few months when I get my rental =)

Splitting payment just to hit a spend promo or whatever is not advisable, IMHO. Using anything other than a single card for the entire transaction (from reservation--if prepaid--all the way through return) will void any CDW coverage your card may include, which may leave you exposed to damage repair costs. I don't even suggest changing cards at return even if you don't incur any damage to the vehicle during your rental, since it's still possible for them to blame and charge you for damage well after your return.
Based on what I know about the Odyssey system that National uses, it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't offer the option to charge multiple cards midway through the rental or that there's confusion with the process when trying to do so in-person at return, but it should theoretically be doable by someone who knows what they're doing at the contract close. |
