Sari Sairanen, president of CAW Local 2002, which represents 5,500 customer sales and service agents, noted that Air Canada's parent company, ACE Aviation Holdings Inc., posted a $258-million profit last year and is forecast by analysts to stage another strong performance in 2006.
"We want a fair distribution of money to employees for their contribution to the company's well-being," Ms. Sairanen said. She also took issue with Montreal-based ACE's payout of $266-million to shareholders this spring, when it distributed Aeroplan Income Fund units and also cash proceeds from selling some of the trust's units.
IAMAW spokesman Bill Trbovich said his 10,000-member union, including ground crew and mechanics, has sacrificed enough and there needs to be an increase in pay.
