25000 OnePass Miles from TD Ameritrade

TD Ameritrade offers 25k OnePass miles if you deposit 50k.

http://tdameritrade.com/offer/partne...ntinental.html

Does anyone know if these has to be invested in stocks and mutual funds only? Can I for example put this 50k into their savings account or open a CD?

Hmmm, I just got a bonus check...

kshahk Sep 18, 2009 9:25 am

Sorry for my ignorance, but what kind of bonus check?

caseydeg Sep 18, 2009 12:21 pm

You don't have to invest the money in any particular securities. You can leave it in your account without purchasing anything and you'll get the bonus. They pay half of the bonus a week or two after you create and fund the account and the other half comes a few months later. Keep the account open for 9 months or they will try to charge you for the miles.

BTW, the Starwood account bonus pays 20k Starpoints for half the deposit amount ($25,000). The redemption to CO is not great, but it is worth considering.

Also, you don't have to deposit cash. Deposits or transfer of securities into the account count, too.

TD Ameritrade has a large number of these types of offers for airline miles or hotel points. You can see them all on the Finance page of my website below.

a better deal is 20k in SPG for funding with $25k, if a person wants UA or CO miles then its not too good as SPG to those carriers is 2:1

i just feel 20k in SPG is worth more then 25k in CO

This sounds great - thanks for posting the info, everyone. Do you have to maintain the entire $25,000 in the account for 9 months? Per the Ameritrade website, "Account must remain open with minimum funding for 9 months, or TD Ameritrade may charge the account for the cost of the Starpoints." What is "minimum funding"??

So forgive my ignorance here but are there hidden fees in getting out of this after the 9 months? I found reference to a $75 fee for "Outbound Full Account Transfer." That is described (unhelpfully) as "Applies only when requesting the transfer of an entire IRA or non-IRA to an account not held at TD AMERITRADE." So wouldn't not doing anthing with the money except collecting the base interest require the transfer of an entire non-IRA to get it out? Here is where I am seeing this:

Yes, I believe the minimum funding is the lowest limit for the award tier you are in ($50k or $25k). I don't know from experience what fees they come after you for if you go under the amount or close the acct early.

Agree that the Starpoints are a better deal on this one.

Value of Stock

Lets say if I transfer stocks worth $25k or transfer $25k to TD Account and then purchase stocks. What happens if total value of stocks go below $25k? Do they charge you for value of miles?

G2244 Sep 23, 2009 6:58 am

It looks like the date on this was quietly extended to 12/31/09. I had been thinking this over with some pressure on the previous 9/30/09 deadline. I looked at it again today and noticed the revised date.

No, they will not charge you for the value of the miles if the value of your stocks go below $25K.

I am considering this offer. I was wondering if there is a cost to the round trip, as in if I open the account with $10,000 and leave it in a money market and then in 9 months I close the account, are there any other charges? closing account charges? monthly charges? etc
