Is everyone leaving Boston this weekend?
Just this morning I booked a 40k 1st class award tickets on AA from BOS-LAX. I had no choice because EVERY SINGLE flight out of Boston on 4/16 is sold out!
OK, I may have exaggerated a little but calling both UA and AA I got the same answer (try it if you don't beleave it). This is straight from the reps: "all classes and virtually all destinations departing from BOS, such as LAX, JFK, IAD, ORD, DEN, and SFO departing 4/16 are completely gone." Any idea why? |
Patriot's Day is a state holiday on Monday, the 20th for Massachusetts. It's a 3-day weekend for a lot of workers. Plus the Boston Marathon is on Monday, which a lot of people will not want to be around for. Believe me, I used to live a block from the finish line; it's a mess on race day.

I hate travelling in or out of Boston on ANY weekend, let alone a holiday.
You might have better luck in PVD. I've flown out of there when Boston was a no-go. |
Um, Jon, could you elaborate? I'm flying into BOS on Friday, July 2nd (holiday weekend) chaning planes/airlines going on to BTV. Is there a chance I may not arrive at BOS on time? Obviously, I have the same story on the way home the following Saturday.

I imagine flying THROUGH Boston is OK, but in my opinion, Logan Airport is just too small for the area it serves. It is just a sea of people on holiday weekends.
As far as delays, it is no different from any other airport I've been to. Getting to/from the airport is a joke. I ride the train in, because it can take an hour to drive the few miles from the Southeast Distressway (I-93). It has parking rates that only a mobster could love, and you'd better wear your hiking boots to get to the terminal. However, if you have the opportunity to be in Boston on the July 4th weekend, walk (don't be foolish enough to try to drive) down to the Charles River to watch the fireworks at the Esplanade. Be sure to sit near someone with a radio so you can hear the Boston Pops play. It is a 5-mile riverside party. I grew up in Cambridge. We would go down to the river around 8AM to stake out a spot and spend the whole day playing frisbee and wiffle ball. By 3:00, it would start to get pretty crowded. By 5:00, you'd better be ready to defend your spot. At dusk, the music starts and at nightfall, the fireworks begin. I have 3 little ones (4 years, 22 mos, and 8 mos). In a few years, we're going to get a family tradition started. |
OMNI:
Jon, I fly into & out of BOS every week & going to Logan has always been easy for me since I take Rte. 1 to 60 to 1A. I accidently took 93 twice and swore never again! ------------------ Regards, - Anna |
I take the same route when I MUST drive to the airport, but like most other roads in greater Boston (and the entire state, for that matter), there are very few signs which could offer assistance to out-of-towners.
If you don't know about the East Boston approach to the airport, you're stuck using the Southeast Distressway. |
