Is There Any Way To Get Back Cancelled Miles?
 

First post and I'm fuming mad!

I just found out that United deleted/cancelled my mileage in Feb. 2009. I was never informed of this action before they deleted it.

I closed out the United Mileage credit card in Feb. 2007. One CS person told me that I could buy my mileage back. That's ridiculous! Pay for something I already paid for!

Then she said that I could use 'credit' from another "partner" VISA card towards my United account to reactivate my mileage and gave me a number to call. It was the United VISA application number and that lady did not know of any such thing-to reactivate a closed account with credit from another VISA card.

What the hell is up UNITED!?

Is there anything that can be done to get that mileage credit back? I had over 56,000 miles on there!

From the MP "Rules":

10. Effective December 31, 2007 miles will expire if there is no current activity for 18 months consecutive. Therefore if the expiration date on your Mileage Plus summary is December 31, 2007 or after, your new expiration date will be 18 months after your last activity. Activity includes flying, using your Mileage Plus Visa and more, for example:
- Fly UA or a Star Alliance partner
- Use your Mileage Plus credit card
- Do business with a Mileage Plus partner
-Redeem miles for award travel
-Buy miles or transfer miles
11. "Account activity", for purposes of these Rules, shall be deemed to occur when a member accrues mileage in his or her account in any manner set forth in these Rules, or as otherwise approved by United, or when the member redeems any Mileage Plus or partner award by the use of mileage in the member's account.

They have no obligation to give you the miles back. Looks like they did not take the miles until well after the 18 months.

The one caveat, "do business with a mileage plus partner"

It's not just UA. All U.S. based airlines have similar expiration policies in place (from 12, 18, 24, or 36 months).

You can "buy" your expires UA miles back. Here's how.

You allow your miles expired.

The expiration policy is part of the terms when you enroll in Mileage Plus FFP. You had agreed to those terms when you first enrolled. If you failed to examine the rules or read the fine prints, you cannot blame the airlines.

Here's what UA says on Mileage Plus Choices Program Terms and Conditions:
It's not that difficult to have ONE activity every 18 months. You can even just buy a $.99 music download from UA Mileage Plus Mall every 18 months.

If you do value your miles that much, you should have paid more attention to it. I value my miles like cash. I watch closely with all my bank accounts and miles/points accounts and make sure I am not losing any single penny.

Sorry you just learned an expensive lesson. If you want your expired UA miles, you have to buy them back now. If you don't want to pay, you just lose your 56000+ miles forever.
