Help for a newbie

Hi

First let me tell you that I have read these boards for close to 2 years trying to become educated. You guys are amazing. The mileage runs are so interesting for me to read. Amazing.

Second. I can usually find answers to my questions by using the search feature. This time I am in a quandary.

My oldest son has been chosen to be a Rotary Ambassador to Japan. I need some creative thinking on how to afford to get him there.

I have:

American Express Rewards = 48,584
USAir Dividend Miles = 12,680
USAir Awarded Tickets = 200,000. (I had 4 FC tickets AVP-YVR, but got air from PHL to SEA for $200 will rebank)

I need:
A ticket that the date of return can be changed in case of an emergency.

I would like:
A seat that he does not have his knees in his ears.

With what I have, what would be my best course of action?

Thanks for any ideas y'all may have! If this is posted to the wrong place, let me know where to post it.

Thank you
Pennamom

forgot to add, he will fly from any of the following NYC/EWR/PHL/SYR

Welcome to FT too http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

With the US Miles you have after re-banking the 200k, you should be able to use 90k for a Business Class seat or 120k for First (if you're intent on spoiling him!) on a RT to Japan on UA.

One nice thing about Award tickets is that dates can be changed without penalty, only subject to availability (which, in an emergency, would mean he could probably standby for the next open seat home).

Best wishes~!

many airlines DO charge you to change an award ticket but sometimes, when it is an emergency they may not, and if the airline makes a significant schedule change on a date then you can often leverage this in your favor as well.

However, seems like you can get a ticket on a partner as said above, but with those AMEX reward points, you might even consider cashing some in for things your friends need and have them give your son gifts for it. Cash helps but then again, one isnt 'supposed' to say that's what they are getting in return.

Additionally, maybe your own friends need things you can get for them with the AMEX rewards and in turn, THEY have access to tickets or many miles or other award options available on other airlines that you could use. This makes for more choices and options for your son.

Trades of like or partial value can often be useful in some circles... It can work when done in the friends and family circle. You just have to get creative, that's all. Always keep records too.

Welcome!
