Upgrade on FF freebies???
Can you get an upgrade on free award tickets at the counter if you are a gold medallion and have a zillion 500 segment upgrades coming to you? If not, what would be the fee to upgrade to first class if available?
It is a four hour flight........ |
Absolutely no way, with or without a fee.
[Edited to add:] And not even if you are a Plutonium Medallion. Sorry and welcome to FT! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ------------------ Vasant [This message has been edited by vasantn (edited Feb 03, 2004).] |
Years ago, AA used to allow you to purchase an upgrade to business class from an award coach seat by paying the difference between full fare coach and full fare business. (In 1989, before AA had any European flights out of Boston, a Boston ticket agent miscalculated this difference and upgraded me on a JFK-ORY flight from an award Y ticket to C for about $150 RT.) Are there any airlines that will still allow you to do this? Nonetheless, given the difference in cost between international Y and international C, even if this were allowed I think that for most routes one would be better off purchasing a discounted Y ticket and then using miles to upgrade to C, rather than using miles for Y and paying to upgrade to C.

Northwest upgrades their Golds and Platinums on domestic coach award tickets.
I've been successful mooching upgrades at the gate on United, but this is definitely not policy. |
Officially, Vasant is right - no chance.
