Inflated value of miles??
I was just browsing on Ebay and found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=19272 It is a certificate good for 500 miles on any one of Continental Airlines , Delta Air Lines , Northwest Airlines and US Airways. But that is still only 500 miles. At the time I found it, with over a day left in the auction, it was going for $31.00!!!! |
It never ceases to amaze me how dumb some folks can be. CO sells 1000 miles for $32.
|
Didn't PremEx once sell a UA drink chit for $20?

You are bidding on a 500 mile certificate which is redeemable on one of four different airlines. Continental Airlines , Delta Air Lines , Northwest Airlines and US Airways. You have until December 31, 2004 to redeem this certificate and place these miles into your account. Keep in mind you would have to spend $500.00 dollars on your credit card to earn 500 frequent flyer miles. |
He previously sold a 500 mile certificate for $76!!!!!!!!

I think that there are actually people who think that a 500 mile cert gives you a flight of 500 miles at redemption time. Obviously this is far from the actual truth, but that may explain why people have paid as much as $76 for this cert that, in actuality, is worth between $5 and $10 depending on who you ask. The price the airlines sell the miles at is, in my opinion, not a very good deal. AA wants $27.50 - $25 per 1000 miles, depending on how many you buy and tacks on a $25 fee per transaction. Still a better deal than bidding on this cert though.

Hey, I once sold a Starwood SPG50 on ebay for >$30 and promptly received a cease and desist letter from spg with a stern warning that my points would be confiscated next time. Haven't done it since.
|
Thank goodness Starwood is so diligent busting up the tens-of-dollars online black market in SPG50's. Otherwise, they'd have to invest those IT resources in fixing their POS website, and we sure wouldn't want that.

gleff recalls:
Didn't PremEx once sell a UA drink chit for $20? Back in 1999, I listed 3 UA drink/headset chits for sale on eBay. Just for fun and trying to make a point to my girlfriend about how with a little "marketing" by a nice item description, even almost worthless paper could fetch good money on eBay, I wrote the following sales pitch: 3 United Airlines Drink/Movie Headset Coupons. Often referred to as "chits" by the airline industry, these entitle the bearer to their choice of either a Cocktail or a Movie Headset rental while onboard a United Airlines flight. This set represents 3 different types of these popular chits, making this a great addition to any United Airlines collection. The top chit shown below is by far the rarest and most difficult to obtain...a Premier Executive 1K chit. These are only given to United's highest level of frequent flyers...those who fly a minimum of 100,000 actual air miles per year! Anyone who flys that much certainly deserves a few free drinks! The middle chit shown (brown) is a Travel Agency chit. These are given in limited quantities to those Travel Agencies who produce high sales volume with United, to use themselves or give to their best customers. The bottom chit is a Retail chit. These are available for purchase in books of ten, in advance, at United City Ticket Offices or through the mail. All three chits offered here are NEW and MINT. They have no expiry date and can be kept for your collection, or if you really want, used for a couple of vodka tonics and a crummy movie on your next United flight! Good Luck! Just goes to show you that one persons junk is another person's "memorabilia." http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
And BTW, I sent them to the winning bidder...free of charge. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Offering a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. It is a bas-relief of our 16th, and arguably our most important, President of the USA. The image was struck in rich copper-clad zinc and depicts the man who saved our Union in profile from the shoulder up. Accompanying the image are the word "Liberty" and authentication of the year in which this portrait was produced.
If you act right now, we will include at no extra charge an image of the Lincoln Memorial. This oft-visited site in Washington, DC is frequently used as a backdrop for important and sometimes historically significant events. Some say that if you look closely at the Lincoln Memorial image, you can see Abraham Lincoln himself seated in the center! Don't wait to get your copy of these historical images. Multiple years available. Collect them all. |
