c2it DEAD

Just rec'vd this e-mail

Dear c2it(sm) Member,

Effective November 9, 2003, the c2it service will be discontinued and
financial transactions using the www.c2it.com website will no longer
be available. At this time, your c2it account will also be closed,
however you may continue to log on to the website until February 22,
2004 to manage your membership information and view your statements.

You currently do not have a balance in your c2it account. As of
November 9, 2003, your c2it account will simply be closed.

If for any reason you have funds in your c2it account upon closure on
November 9, 2003, a check will be sent to the address we have on file
for you. Checks will be mailed on or around November 18, 2003.
Please allow 7-10 business days after November 18, 2003 to receive
your check.

If you also have a c2it Debit Card, it will be cancelled on November
9, 2003 and you will no longer be able to use it for transactions,
including purchases and cash withdrawals.

For more information about the discontinuance of c2it service and
answers to many questions you may have, please visit www.c2it.com and
click the link to view "Important Details and FAQs".

We appreciate your business with c2it and apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause.

Sincerely,

c2it Customer Service

Ah, well, another one loses to paypal.

Sigh .. I remember the good ol' days back in '01 when c2it had no fees and let you have 3 accounts. And transfering money from one account to the other was seamless. Racked up over 100,000 miles.

Of course back then, penny candy was only a dime.

Surely our (ab)use of that system didn't contribute to its demise...

quick question for the veterans.

Does "ontheroad"'s comment mean that this sort of a racking up of miles is possible on paypal still? I pay myself using a mileage credit card sorta scenario?

Welcome to FlyerTalk, Angelino!

The problem with a strategy based on PayPal is that the fees for card-funded transactions are rather steep (~>2% of each transaction, I believe). The beauty of c2it was that it was (once upon a time) totally free.

They couldn't figure out, despite my providing a helpful U.S. Postal Service link, that this part of the United States was not a foreign country, and eventually closed my account on that basis. (!)

Despite being a subsidiary of Citibank, or whatever bank it was, c2it did not display a great deal of competence.

Its demise does not surprise me.

Coincidentally, PayPal has eliminated referral bonuses entirely now (Though they had so many strings attached that they stopped being any kind of inducement some time ago).

Next up could be PayPal charging people to withdraw electronically from their accounts. No doubt they'll claim a wave of overuse "forcing" the move (though there would be lots of alternative non-fee ways to address that).

C2it sounds like it was the right idea, but came too late and definitely from the wrong source. As bad as eBay/PayPal have gotten with fees, major banks like Citicorp would only be worse, I'm afraid. Could be the best "opening" left for a decent competitor to PayPal is via outfits like StormPay that fill in gaps deliberately left by PayPal for legal CYA reasons. Kinda like the only mom & pop video stores surviving the Blockbuster onslaught being the ones that rented porn. You can bet that any major bank looking to take on PayPal head-to-head will do so with hopes of becoming even more of a monopoly and charging higher fees than PP.
