AMEX MR Conversion

Hi, first time posting, new to the website. This is great, I'm already addicted to checking the website for news at least twice a day.

Need Help-what's the best way to take advantage of MR points? Just got my new *tarwood AMEX and will start using it but have a lot of points from my Gold Card. The conversion to *wood is terrible but I need the points to go to *wood & Delta. Suggestions to maximize the points?

Hello -

Welcome to FT.

May I suggest that you may wish to ask this question in the AmEx forum? It's under FT Miles, just like MilesBuzz!, just scroll down about 3/4ths of the way down the page.

However, I'll give you my thoughts anyway. The AmEx -> Starwood conversion rate is terrible, so I wouldn't go that route unless you really need the points.

You said you fly Delta, so why not just transfer your MR points directly to Delta on a 1:1 basis?

Welcome to Flyertalk, cowboy1228! Good to have you on board.

As mentioned above, this question is best suited (and likely to get the best answer even) over in the American Express forum. I'll move this post over there.

In the meantime, I'd suggest hanging onto your Membership Rewards points until you actually need them in a specific account -- they're more valuable where they are, with flexibility -- or until you are ready to cancel the Amex with Membership Rewards. Definitely move your points out before cancelling so you don't forfeit them.

There's a current offer, by the way, for 5000 bonus Delta points for transferring 20,000 Membership Rewards points.

The larger point is you might wait to make the transfer until there's an attractive bonus. There are transfer bonuses quite frequently ... seems at least once a year there's a bonus for Delta and Continental transfers. I know I saw a 1/3 transfer bonus to Starwood last year as well.

Best,
Gary
