Best option for Chicago to London
 

I'm moving to Chicago soon and will be flying to London probably about once a month. I'm trying to figure out what frequent flyer program and credit card rewards program would be best for me.

If only BA and AA had legitimate codeshare, this would be an easy decision. I'm currently leaning towards UA since BMI and Air Canada also offer flights to LON (though not non-stop), but Virgin is also appealing.

I don't know; I'm just curious what people's thoughts are.

I'll only talk about Star Alliance here, since this is the Star Alliance forum...

If you are going to buy C or F fares, bmi's Diamond Club is a slam-dunk choice. Huge bonuses for premium fares, plus the best redemption options in the alliance make it the best choice. If you're buying Coach, United's Mileage Plus is a good option because of the Systemwide upgrades (SWUs) you'll earn when you hit the 100K EQM mark. You'll only be able to upgrade three of your round-trips per year, but it's better than nothing.

As far as mileage cards are concerned, they are all pretty similar. You get less of an initial bonus with the BA card, but you get 2 for 1 mileage for BA purchases.

I would probably sign up for BMI's program as it is the best for status and earning miles.

If you are considering AA, then make sure and sign up for the Gold or Platinum challenge. You will will have Gold status after one trip or Platinum after 2. Go to the AA forum and read the sticky at the top. AA counts any miles earned, flight, credit card, hotels, etc toward the lifetime gold or platinum status.

After gold, your first RT, you would have access to international lounges even when flying coach. This can be a nice perk.
