Upgrading a FF ticket

Does anyone know? Is it possible (i.e. within the realm of fiscal sanety) to get an upgrade on a ticket acquired via frequent flyer miles? I am making my fifth trip to Europe in the fall. The 11 hour trips from the left coast USA are getting very old in economy. I am not rich but if there is any way I would love to get into the larger, more comfortable seats. I am flying Northwest/KLM from Sacramento, CA to Amsterdam via Seattle. Thanks in advance.

BOhannon,

Welcome to Flyertalk. As this question is specific to the Northwest program, I'm moving it to that forum. The experts there can give you a firm answer.
