BOSTON get-together

kyklin and I are in the process of finalising restaurant options - he will most likely make a posting tonight.

We plan to offer a choice of restaurants - I have already made a (tentative) booking at restaurant X, which we will cancel if it is not the democratic choice...

At the moment the reservation is set for 8.30 on Saturday March 20th, with drinks beforehand - I anticipate a similar time frame at any other restaurant.

We now need to know exactly who is definitely coming... I've made a booking for 15 people, but if we need to increase that number we'd like to give the restaurant advance notice.

On my list at the moment I have:
Catman
Deb
Demeter
onefreeman & raeban
NJDavid & wife
Matt Wald
AnnaS
MileCrazy
PremEx

roti, leroy, chalf, BostonJudy and others ... if you're in town, you're invited...

As I am going to be away for the next week, please would you e-mail confirmations to kyklin <[email protected]>

kyklin Mar 3, 1999 11:49 am

In deciding the restaurant for our get-together, baobab and I thought the place should be accessible, have a balanced menu (have seafood or vegetarian cuisine), and be affordable (that rules out the Ritz). And it has to be a good restaurant, too, of course.

A reservation was made at Harvest, a restaurant at Harvard Square in Cambridge. It has a Mediterranean/ New American style of cuisine. You can read reviews of the restaurant at http://boston.com/globe/calendar/dining/harvest.htm and http://boston.sidewalk.com/link/37480.

Other possibilities that can accommodate large parties:
Sandrine's - Alsatian/French cooking in Cambridge
Selected amongst Esquire's 1998 Best New Restaurants of America and one of my favorites. http://boston.sidewalk.com/link/41929

Grille 23 - Steak House in the Back Bay area
Good steaks and fish and wine list. Cigar smoking allowed here!
http://boston.com/globe/calendar/dining/grille_23.htm

If you are not on the confirmed list and would like to attend, or if you like to vote for one of the 3 restaurants, please let me know.

Ken

Catman Mar 3, 1999 12:19 pm

I'm not "finicky" like my friend Morris so whatever the majority decides, just let me know and I'll be there dressed in my favorite cat tie! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

AnnaS Mar 3, 1999 12:30 pm

Ken:

Sandrine's sounds wonderful! Made me feel a little hungry even after coming back from lunch! Grille 23 also sounds like a good option. These get my vote, Harvest is my distant 3rd choice. Hope this helps!

- Anna

MileCrazy Mar 3, 1999 3:19 pm

not one of those restaurants is eligible for united dining points!! but i'll vote for grill_23 for steaks & cigars.

kyklin Mar 3, 1999 3:58 pm

Sandrine's used to be eligible for UA dining points (among other dining programs) when it first opened, which was how I came upon it. Unfortunately, I think their business got so good that they do not need it to attract any more customers.

In case if one is wondering why certain other fine restaurants did not make the list, it is because they cannot accomodate large parties on a Saturday night. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

QuietLion Mar 3, 1999 4:57 pm

Oh my gosh! The Harvest is one of my favorite restaurants in the WORLD! Wish I could be there, but I'll be in the Big Apple. Bon Appetit and remember... you can always tell a Harvard man, but you can't tell him much.

demeter Mar 4, 1999 11:11 am

My vote - Harvest. Thanks!

PremEx Mar 4, 1999 1:19 pm

Harvest sounds yummy to me, but so does the French one. And the other allows cigars! Yipee! Whatever you all want is fine with me. I hereby bequeth my proxy.

i don't know anything about this restaurant, but it is offering 40% off for transmedia members during march:

Vadopazzo
251 Hanover St
Boston, MA 02109
Phone: 617-723-1760
Fax: 617-367-0666

kyklin Mar 5, 1999 3:37 pm

Vadopazzo's food is average. In addition, it is located in the North End (Italian negihborhood) that is not so easily accessible. I have not even been in the area yet!

Neverthless, someone once did brought me good cannolis from a North End bakery!

(Music them from The Godfather plays...)

Sorry for the delay in responding- this has been my most intense UA flying weeks yet! I would love to attend (and my husband as well)!! In the past 2 1/2 weeks:

Flew Boston-Chicago and return, got the flu.

Thurs: Got last flight out of Boston before the snowstorm and flew to HNL to see sister for the weekend (no problem upgrading both ways) arrived 6:30 am Mon. and was back in the office by 10:00 am.

Weds:flew through Dulles to BWI. Missed connection to UA Express, was put in a taxi to get there. Attended conference, returned tonight, repacked my bags.

Tomorrow: 9am UA flight to SanFran, then on to SNA (upgraded). I'll return to Boston on 3/10.

I now feel sufficiently airworthy to attend this dinner with all of you veterans!! Any of the initial 3 restaurants would be great (although I'd love a steak...!!)

kyklin Mar 8, 1999 3:04 pm

Confirmed as of 3/8:

Catman
NJDavid (2)
AnnaS
demeter
Milecrazy
PremEx
BostonJudy (2)
Baobab (2)
Kyklin

Waiting to hear from:
Deb, onefreeman & raeban, Matt Wald, Auh20, and others who are in town...

Please reply by posting or e-mail before Friday 3/12.

Thanks!
-Ken L.

Please just tell me where to be! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

kyklin Mar 15, 1999 9:42 am

The place to be at 8.30 on Saturday March 20th (with drinks beforehand) will be HARVEST!

44 Brattle St
Cambridge, MA 02138
At the end of Church Street
(617) 868-2255

baobab Mar 15, 1999 10:36 am

Please note that the entrance to this restaurant does not face the street - you have to walk down the side of the building. However, its neighbour (42, or 46, I can't remember which) is clearly marked, and this should help you to find your way to Harvest.

kokonutz Mar 15, 1999 1:33 pm

I'm supposed to land @ 6:30...is there enough time to check in (Backbay Hilton) and make the dinner, or should I just cab it straight to dinner (or drinks, as the case may be)????

kyklin Mar 15, 1999 2:46 pm

I'd say you will have plenty of time, depending on your mode of transportation.

Cab from Logan to Hilton is about 25 minutes and ~$25. Subway (T) is about 30-40 minutes and involves one transfer (blue to green line).

Cab from Hilton to Harvard Square is <10 minutes. T from Hilton is about 20 minutes b/c you have to transfer from green to transfer to red line. A slightly quicker way is to get on the #1 bus (in front of Tower Records) which goes straight down Mass ave, across the rive, and into Cambridge. #1 bus' last stop is Harvard Square.

baobab Mar 15, 1999 4:52 pm

(As per Catman's request):
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority website can be found at http://www.mbta.com and subway maps can be found at http://www.mbta.com/schedules/maps/spider/

Taking the bus costs 60c, the T (subway) costs 85c.

Using mapquest, you can see where Harvest is in relation to Boston/Cambridge:
http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_find?screen=ia-map-result&link=ia-map-result&uid=u6t20dnebccosayv
takes you to a map of the two cities, and Harvest is marked by the red star in the upper left hand corner of the map. Highway 2A is Massachusetts Avenue, along which the No. 1 bus runs.
The airport is off the screen to the right - highway 1 passes it.

Boston is a relatively compact city - you should have no trouble getting from A to B in minimal time.

MileageAddict Mar 15, 1999 7:10 pm

I'll be in Boston in mid-May. Any chance of another get together then?

leroy11 Mar 15, 1999 7:54 pm

Sorry I couldn't make this get-together. Although I do live in Boston, I will be out-of-town that week. Sorry! However, you have picked a great new restaurant to eat at near Harvard Square. Have fun ...

PremEx Mar 19, 1999 10:46 am

baobab Mar 19, 1999 1:27 pm

Thank you Ken - I was just digging up your e-mail message to see who had confirmed [Ken took care of all the confirmations while I was swanning about in the Bahamas http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ]

Did you deliberately omit Matt Wald, or are you just trying to wind him up??

onefreeman Mar 19, 1999 3:46 pm

Like we need to try to wind Matt up????

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

And we're soooo sorry we can't make it...

NJDavid Mar 19, 1999 7:41 pm

OK, the JPEG camera is packed...the notebook too.

The only panic from Helen, "I need to pack nice clothes for dinner...what is the typical dress for the restaurant?"

In any case, see ya'll tomorrow...

(PS - Upgrades on CO for Myself, Helen and Catman look good....)

PremEx Mar 20, 1999 8:27 am

Ok...I'm at the airport and my flight looks to be on time! Headed to Boston for the FlyerFest this evening and looking forward to meeting everyone (and hearing some sort of speech from Rudi?)! See you soon.

Rudi Mar 20, 1999 9:34 am

Matt: THE SPEECH! DON't FORGET.

BlondeBomber Mar 20, 1999 10:07 am

Have a blast!

NJDavid Mar 20, 1999 10:24 am

Greetings from the Hilton Boston Back Bay (a 3 star property if ever I saw one).

My wife and I are off to have lunch with CATMAN at the the "top of the hub" at the Prudential building.

See you all later....

PremEx Mar 20, 1999 3:00 pm

My United flight touched down on time and exactly 20 minutes later I'm online at the new Marriott Residence Inn Cambridge...Ba Da Bing! Nice hotel, nice weather, and a great flight in United First with probably the best flight attendent I've ever had serve me, and guess what Rudi? She's Swiss! Starting out fantastic...even have a bit of time for a quick nap before heading out to meet everyone for dinner (and Cubans!). More later.

Rudi Mar 21, 1999 9:20 am

I am soooooo jealous! and - why don't they ever "organize" a swiss stewardess on my flights?
