Airlines' Mileage Plan Changes Unfair

Airlines' Mileage Plan Changes Unfair

South Korea's Fair Trade Commission ordered Korean Air Co. (Q.KAL) and Asiana Airlines Inc. not to apply changes in their frequent flier mileage program retroactively, the corporate watchdog said Thursday.
South Korea's airlines have said they will change their frequent-flier mileage programs - mostly by raising the mileage-point requirements for benefits such as bonus tickets and seat upgrades - in a bid to reduce accumulating mileage-point debt.

They said the new regulations will take effect later this year or early next year and will apply to all outstanding mileage, although there will be a six- month grace period during which customers can use their mileage according to the original policy before the revised rules take effect.

Seems only fair, eh? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Same old valuable member. Many thanks for this doc, I hadn't seen it and it looks like a great victory of sorts for members of those two programs. I think I'll follow up on this and seek the whole report to use somewhere in the halls of Washington, D.C. or elsewhere that needs a reminder that frequent flyers can and should have some rights.

Again, thanks doc.

When Delta changed their Frequent Flyer Program (ie Pre-SkyMiles), they did not make it retroactive. This seemed only fair since you were acquiring miles based on what you understood the rules to be at the time you flew.

This debate has benn going on for quite some time. The only issue I have is that if KE and OZ doesn't raise their redemption rates, how does this affect their alliance redemption rates on their respective airlines? I am happy that about the proposed no change as I fly both but don't know if this will go through to our benefit or not.
