I think that athletes should be allowed to keep the miles. For crying out loud, when they are traveling they are missing class, missing quality study time, and are having to put up with the same inconveniences as other travelers. A few miles for their trouble does not seem to be out of line.
I don’t think that many coaches would be trumpeting the mileage opportunities that their university offers. “I think you should came to play for our university. We have a very busy travel schedule. I know, I know, you’ll still have to take care of your grades while being low on sleep, jet lagged, and stuck in airports, but think of the miles! Why, by the time you graduate, you may have racked up enough for a free ticket anywhere in the lower 48! If we go to the playoffs, you could even have enough for a couple of upgrades!”
If you think about it, a lot of college teams do a fair amount of their travel on the bus. Even in Division I competition, many of the conference schools are only a few hours of driving time away. Does anyone know have an idea of how many flight miles a typical Div I men’s or women’s basketball team logs a year? I would be surprised if there are many that are over 20K.
