Does SA frequent flyer program exist?
 

My parents went to Africa this January and wanted to know whether they would be able to receive frequent flyer miles for the flights on SA (HKG->JNB->NBC->JNB->VFA->JNB->CPT->JNB->HKG). I checked with their website, but didn't see any information about frequent flyer programs from South African Airlines. (No review on webflyer.com, eigher.) Do they have one?

Also, do the airlines usually allow back-credits? My parents flew in January and they don't have any ff accounts yet at neither SA nor cathay pacific.

I don't know of any ff program that allows back credit for flights. Missing credit yes, back credit no. Have no idea if SA has a frequent flyer program; might have been better to see if they had any alliances w/ other airlines & join that airlines program. Are your parents going to be going there on a regular basis? If not, might not be worth it. If they are, I know BA goes into SA, although their program just changed.

Using a partner program may give you more flexibility in building miles across more airlines. While Voyager also partners with some, you should look at what future travel patterns may be.

I actully am a member of the Voyager program, (joined on a whim, perhaps the only FTer whos a member). They give you a bagtag too but after checking their Frequent Flyer Guide, no back mileage can be credited).

Back-credit (prior to opening a ff account) is usually not allowed.

Do your parents already have accounts with Delta or American? SA flights earn Delta mileage and CX flights earn American mileage. For Delta, if they mail/fax in their boarding passes and ideally their ticket receipt they can expect the mileage to show up in about 6 to 8 weeks. Not sure how long AA takes. If they don't have the boarding passes then maybe the ticket receipt/itinerary and their baggage tags might work.

These miles could be credited also to the Qantas frequent flyer program (depending on booking class). QF allow credit for flights taken up to three months before joining.

SAS EuroBonus is also a member of SAA. As a new member of EuroBonus you can get credit for flights taken one month before your enrollment date.

When I flew South African I credited the miles to DL. I was fortunate that there was a double miles promotion going on and I got double credits. The only thing was that my flights were actually ticketed by DL via a codeshare and one of the connecting flights was on DL (JFK-ATL) and the rest were on SAA. I do not know if the codeshare is necessary to get DL credits, but if you went to South Africa, you most certainly have a lot of miles from that trip and it would be a shame to lose them.

KLM allowed it several years ago when I first joined FD it as long as you signed up no longer than 6 months after the flight. Not sure what the rules are now though.
