Best airport to fly into in DC?
 

This is a last minute trip, and I need to end up in the Georgetown / Foggy Bottom area.

I know DCA's convenient, but it's pretty expensive.

What's the next best choice in the late afternoon?

And, is DCA so much better that I should consider it?

DCA is by far the most convenient. You can be in Foggy Bottom by Metro in under 20 minutes. Either Dulles or BWI are good alternatives, taking the Washington Flyer bus from Dulles to the West Falls Church metro, or the frequent MARC trains from BWI to Union Station, where you can connect to the Metro.

Yes DCA is by far the most convenient as well as being the most pleasant airport. I guess that's why it's so much more expensive.

BWI is the cheapest of the bunch, not surprisingly because it's a Southwest town. The only problem is connecting into DC. THere is a metrobus that connects to the metro which will cost all of about $3.50 into MetroCenter. THere is a shuttle to the train, either Amtrak (pricey) or MARC (crowded commuter, hours not so good). But with the money saved you can get a shuttle bus no probs to DC and still be in front.
Dulles, IAD, is good for international flights and transcontinental, United and JetBlue. But it tends to be not that much cheaper, in my limited experience, than DCA. ALso transport is a little difficult as well, at least until they extend the MEtro, which I think is due in 2005/6.

Safe travelling.

I was at a conference in DC recently and I'm glad I had the foresight to fly into DCA. My colleagues who chose other airports faced taxi rides up to 60 minutes to and from the convention center (versus 10 minutes for me).

DCA is your best choice without any other consideration. Make sure you calculate the added time and expense of arriving in DC from the other airports if you opt for either BWI or IAD.
