AA Devaluation: What are the facts?
I'm trying to decide if I should stay with UA or concentrate on AA.
On a MilesBuzz topic, AA Devaluation: Why is this legal, it states that "in May of 2003, American will be charging 25% more miles for certain award tickets". There are several requests for details in the thread that have gone unanswered. Would someone please provide the details or the link for details? Thanks |

A few AA awards are increasing in mileage cost. A couple of the awards are going up 25% and a couple are going up less. I think United is even matching some of these new award levels (or maybe AA matched United...I don't know). It's not mass devaluation. Your decision whether to fly AA or UA probably won't be affected by these changes. The strangest thing about the AA changes is that they don't seem to make a lot of sense. It looks like they are effectively trying to discourage anyone from ever making an F/J award booking to Hawaii. Are they actually selling a lot of these seats? Are they going to sink a lot of money into making Hawaii F a great product? (Because it's only so-so now.) |
The premium seating for 767 flights to Hawaii is being radically improved.

Hawkeye:
I faced a similar AA vs. UA dilemma a couple of years ago. While the landscape has changed significantly, I chose AA back then and have not regretted the decision. Overall, the earning and burning opportunities have been better, and as an AA elite (Platinum), I've felt well supported. I'm upgraded constantly. Hope this helps. |
Howdy,
I have a choice - and could fly UA. I feel that AA gets me through security a bit faster (a few more airports with elite checkin). Get's me on my plane faster more often when it matters (so I don't worry about overhead space). And most of all, I earn more than enough miles to fly my family in F on 2-3 vacations a year - while at the same time having the ability to upgrade myself whenever I want. I'm a fan. Keep the faith, Pakse |
Thanks for all of the feedback. The only thing that keeps me considering UA is 1/2 million life time miles.
If AA still had Diet Dr. Pepper, it would sure make my decision easier. |
