I donated an un-round number of miles to charity in addition to the tickets, should have made that clear.

Sometimes you can spend xx,500 miles if you book one-way coach and one-way business class, depending on what the airline charges.

Every 2,000 points you transfer from Diners Club to an airline now requires a "handling fee" of either money or 190 points. So you've really spent 1,090 miles to move 1,000 miles to an airline - another way to spend an un-round number of miles.

I suppose another way to spend an un-round number of miles would be to be the winning bidder, using miles, for a vacation package, which a few airlines do.

2003 redemption (UA) 355K award miles

af fp Jan 16, 2003 2:24 am

Used 2002 :
AF, over 200 000 (incl Concorde)
UA, 20 000 (on LH)
CO, 50 000

Plan to use 20 000 BA and 15 000 UA (on BM) to clear those accounts in 2003.
Maybe another 200 000 AF

As you see I clear them as they come, miles accounts are not saving accounts.

1.2M AA (half used on CX F redemptions for myself and family, other half given to friends and family for transat upgrades and Hawaii trips)

120K Hilton, got rid of orphaned HH points on visiting family.

My hoarding of starpoints may not have been the smartest thing given the top tier devaluations though http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif still I like having the ability to transfer to various airlines in case I need Premium class ticket for some reason.

160,000 Marriott Rewards - Orient Express trip Venice - London

rtpflyer Jan 16, 2003 8:09 am

Between myself and Ms. rtpflyer (who has her own accounts):

Redeemed in 2001 for use in 2002:

95000 Marriott
80000 BA
45000 DL

Redeemed and used in 2002:

145000 US

Redeemed in 2002 for use in 2003:

185000 US
40000 NW

We would have redeemed more (especially on US), but we kept getting bump vouchers (11 total I think) that had to be used in 2002 and early 2003. I think we've finally scheduled the last of those for February.
