5000 skymiles points for $21.95 - Earthlink

The fine print says:

"5000 bonus miles will be earned when customer has an active EarthLink account for a minimum of 30 days. Please allow up to 12 weeks from time of activation for miles to appear in your SkyMiles ® account."

1. How easy will it be to get a minimum of 30 days service without paying more than 1 monthly fee?

2. Any expected problems if you have to complain 4 months from now (12 weeks) about a Skymiles you didn't receive for a service that you cancelled 3 months prior?

An excellent return though (better than 2c/mile) if you can pull it off.

Jeff

Before someone else asks, I checked the site. In cutting and pasting, the author had a superscript "1" that turned the 5,000 into 15,000. The deal really is for 5,000 miles.

That could be 8,000 for new members.

1,000 for enrollment in Skymiles
https://www.delta-offers.com/offers/...oo/yhooGNA0011
5,000 for Earthlink
2,000 for activating by using a partner.
-----
8,000 miles for $21.95

What if you get DSL thru them? Do you still get miles?

Something you might not know - but as a competitor of Earthlink, my guess is that it is similar.

Call about 2 weeks prior to the bill date and tell them you want to cancel to go to a competitor ISP. Their interest is to keep you as a member and will probably offer you a month or two beyond your membership in order to "compare" the two. Now, if the thing is that you have to stay 30 days, you are in like Flynn. If the deal is that you actually have to make a purchase (one month membership) then you just got all your miles for $21.XX. If nothing else, it is a good risk to take. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes that's what they did with me but after holding 20 minutes I said thanks but I don't want to hold for 20 minutes again.

Answer to the origonal post is yes I was able to cnacel on the 30th day for me and my wife and baby. For me they asked the last 4 digits of my ssn. I have no idea how they got my ssn. For my wife and baby they asked the last four digits of the credit card. On phone calls they gave a confirmation code for the cancellation. I called in mid month to find out when last day to cancel I was told my card would be charged on the 8th and I needed to call in on the 7th. (the numbers and relationships have been changed to protect the innocent).

On one of our cancellations we went to their website clicked on support and used live chat to cancell. It was much faster and they didn't give a confirmation number to that one but they have a feature to print the chat. It was far more convenient.

Can I get the miles if I'm already a customer by saying I'm considering switching for miles? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

You may have to create a new account since the point is to increase membership. The trick is to call the cancel department, tell them why you are cancelling - being that you have to open a new account to get your miles. More times than not, the billing group will have the promotional code and if you act totally blonde (I just really don't want to lose my old screen name but I really have to earn those miles - I just don't know what to do) if they are smart in that department, they will come up with the promotional code and you will be set. Remember, it doesn't hurt to try. The worst they could say is NO.

Has anyone succeeded with this?

nerd Sep 26, 2002 4:39 pm

The Terms of Service page in the online signup process now mentions a two month minimum (emphasis mine):

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Eligilbility for the premium gift is contingent upon the payment by
subscriber of two months of EarthLink fees. Failure to pay two months of
fees will result in EarthLink charging subscribers a $30 termination fee.</font>
This does not agree with the fine print on the marketing material, which says 30 days. The CSR I spoke to about the offer said he was not aware of any 2 month minimum, but I think the Terms of Service agreement would be the binding one.

emaij Sep 26, 2002 4:42 pm

I don't think it said that when I signed up. Just this: 5000 bonus miles will be earned when customer has an active EarthLink account for a minimum of 30 days.
