There are several threads currently going in this forum as well as the Delta and AMEX forums discussing various things about buying bonds with cc's and other tricks on redeeming, etc.

Briefly, you must hold bonds at least 6 months. But - that goes from the issue date. If you buy on Jan 1 you must hold 6 months - to July 1. If you buy on Jan 27, and get an issue date of Jan - you can still redeem on July 1.
