Killer itineraries
 
I've had a few killer trips recently and I wondered if I'm the only one who does this kind of thing?

One was flying over 30,000 miles in one week. Europe, US, New Zealand, Australia, US, Europe. 4 days in the air, 3 on the ground.

Another was meetings on 3 continents in 3 days. Chile, US (LAX), and Denmark.

Stimpy: No you are by no means alone. There are many fine people on this thread who travel almost constantly.

They don't register where they have been, they don't register where they are going and they gave up counting miles years ago.

I think that is the true mark of a seasoned traveller!

For business, I prefer to keep my flights medium (in miles) and short in time. I regularly do "day" (i.e. less than 24 hr.) trips to the east (from the west), leaving just before midnight, flying to destination, having a meeting and usually returning back home just after suppertime. These are typically 5-6000 mile round trips and last month I was doing 1 a week. Some people hate the red-eyes but I love them!

I like flying but prefer to keep my super long haul trips for vacations. Last year this included Canada-Europe-South Africa (25,000 miles or so) in a 3 week period, the year before that was Australia (about 20-25,000 miles in a 3 week period).

After South Africa in early 1998, on business/volunteer work, back to West Africa a month later then back to Europe and Mexico, on approx. 2 month intervals (with those "day" trips and a couple of Arizona and California vacations sprinkled in between).

While I do enjoy the travelling, if I am doing business/volunteer work overseas I make a point of getting free time for myself to go hiking, birdwatching etc.

I don't know if I could sustain Stimpy's pace if it is almost constant travel month after month. I guess that makes me more of a seasonal than seasoned traveller!

And I thought my flight schedule for next week was bad:

2/24 - LGA-PHX (via DWF)
2/26 - PHX-LGD (via DFW)
2/28 - LGA-PHX (via DFW)
3/2 - PHX-ORD (via DFW)
3/3 - ORD-PHX (Direct -- yeah!)
3/5 - PHX-LGA (via DFW)

12,200 in 8 days. Well, I guess for me -- that was alot!

Now if we can only convince AA to extend Double Miles until 3/5 (12,200 flight, 12,200 bonus, 12,200 plat == 36,600 miles -- not too shabby)

stimpy - you aren't alone. There are many people to whom airline food is more familiar than home cooking.

It sounds as though you are lucky enough to spend most of your time in the developed world. There are some who are obliged to travel to benighted places like Kano, Lahore, Tashkent, etc.

One has to accept it, enjoy it, or get a new job.

Well, if you are going to have a tough itinerary, add some fun to it. I should be flying:
Mar 08 PHL to ABQ for Deposition on 9th;
Mar 09 ABQ to PHX for Depo. on 10th;
Mar 10 PHX to DEN for Depo. on 11th; and
Mar 12 DEN to PHL home (don't want to fly red eye on night of 11th).

Instead, I'll fly out to ABQ on evening of 7th, to have the 8th to check around ABQ and Santa Fe (we're going there on 3FF tickets + mine purchased over Easter on TWA). I'll fly TWA because 1) No one flys PHL to ABQ direct, 2) I can get YUP fare on TWA to FC, and 3) will give me segments toward TWA promotion--fly 10 segments by certain date and get 2 free RT tickets for use in fall.

Then, instead of flying back on the 12th, I'll stay on for 2 more days and head to Vail or another resort and pick up a couple of days of skiing. Friend is working on comp. lift tickets for me (he does a lot of ski area liability litigation). Yes, I have a terrific spouse who will let me ski for a couple of days without too much grousing, so long as I use those 2 TWA tickets in the fall for an adult getaway without the kids. Fly back on TWA also so as to use YUP again and to get the TWA segments for the promotion.

While I had almost sworn off TWA, this promotion has caused me to stay on for at least a while. Fly first class and earn a couple of RT tickets, plus the miles on top of it, hard to pass it up.

Thus, a semi-tough itinerary is turned into a real easy one. Only question is whether to fly SWest or Amer. West between ABQ and Phoenix? Don't belong to SW or Amer.West. AW at least can be combined with other airline miles, so would like to take them, but hesitant because of the threatened flight attendant action. Hate to take a segment that I can't get good credit for in a program that I'll ever use.

That's my story and I'm sticking ...(whoops, that one's already taken!). Nuff said.

With all of this quick Alaska/Horizon stuff, I am beginning to think a 2 hour flight to California is long! I'll be doing some transcontinental stuff to Manchester,NH and Columbus, OH soon.
