Why all the hubub over MyPoints
Hey!
Maybe I'm new [although I -have- crossed the elusive 100 post mark], but I see lots of postings and interest on mypoints.com ... As far as I know, it's lots of work (lots of clicking and persistence and 5-point free-bonuses here and there for small amounts of gift certificates. But it seems to me like a fair number of FTers participate. So what's the catch? |
It depends on what you mean by work. It's not much effort to click on a link for 5 or 10 points, especially if other people are nice enough to post on FT where the offers are.
Three reasons why MyPoints gets lots of attention here: 1) It still exists. Sure, it was much more profitable in the past and so were many of its competitors. Many of its competitors are now either out of business or don't have any free ways to earn anything at all. 2) It provides rewards. Many other sites are showing signs of going bust and are just not delivering. (eg. Milesource.) 3) It provides rewards which include hotel points with Hilton HHonors. FTers tend to have a preference for schemes which can top up their airline or hotel points. [This message has been edited by Kremmen (edited 10-18-2002).] |
I second that emotion. After 18 months of doing HH quarterly web profile updates and collecting Mypoints, I'm at the 15,000 point level, which is enough (if memory serves) for 3 free nights at Opportunity level Hilton hotel. In my books that's well worth my time considering that in places like Sweden where Scandic hotels normally go for 90-130 EUR per night! The best part is I have yet to log a Hilton stay in past 18 months!
That should make sense, even to a Calgarian. |
Ok... now it's personal. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
It's a shame that HHilton points don't work at the Fantasyland Hotel, because that's the only reason to goto Edmonton. Hey, let's keep all the YYC vs. YEG stuff over in the Canadian forum. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
I like MyPoints too... it's essentially free. I've gotten lots of HH points from this program. It's basically a marketing program in the end. You read some ad-filled e-mails, click a link, get a few points. It's easy, it's free and it delivers. Nothing wrong with that.

YYCOllie, I do apologize for my previous remarks. I was a Friday nite kinda thing and couldn't resist. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
I do not apologize for being unabashedly pro-Mypoints. |

Don't worry about it. Any Calgarian/Edmontonian has thick skin when it comes to people from the other city. All in good fun, and I even got to practice my best lines against Edmonchuck. Too bad the Stampeders aren't going to make the playoffs. It's all good, my friend. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif O Originally posted by tcook052: YYCOllie, I do apologize for my previous remarks. Basically, you missed the boat on Mypoints. Over the years it has provided me free airlines, luxury hotel rooms and gift certificates. It was easy. It has since made it harder to earn points and lessen its benefits. However, it can still provide many benefits if you put a lot of effort into it. Maybe it's not worth it anymore. It's for each individual to decide. I must say it has been a wonderful experience dealing with Mypoints-it has never failed to come through and its customer service has alway been good, as oppose to many other websites.

Well, its free. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Of course, it takes up time to click emails. But for a poor grad student like me, hhonors points for just clicking is always welcome. |
Out of curiosity, is there a thread for mypoints opportunities and others like prima awards? Thanks.

As far as I know, try the "S.P.A.M" forum : (Sites with Points and Alternative Miles) http://www.flyertalk.com/forumcgi/fo...e=5&LastLogin= O Originally posted by amoeba: Out of curiosity, is there a thread for mypoints opportunities and others like prima awards? Thanks guys, got me all excited about free HH points. Got redirected to the UK site which only gives Marriot vouchers and then it won't let me join. Signup page is knackered http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I use an US address for my account. Since transfers to HHonors are electronic, unlike Marriott, this poses no problem.
BTW I fully agree with ql2112: It's easy, it's free and it delivers. |
At best, 1 Hilton Honors point = $.01.
1000 MyPoints = 1,000 HH points 1 MyPoint e-mail = 5 Mypoints = 5 HH = $.05 Draw your own conclusions. |
