BEWARE! USAir system wide upgrades not usable on anything less than Q class

Buyer beware! I was just scheduling international travel from IND to FRA and made a reservation on USAirways.com. In previous years I have used system-wide upgrades to go from coach to envoy regardless of class-of-service and you could confirm upgrade up to 1 year in advance.

Oh my how things have changed and without notice I might add. Long story short, I wanted to confirm what class of service I was about to book so on USAirways.com (because it won't tell you on the website) so I called international reservations. What I was about to book was a V and the price was coming in at $637.

Guess what? International told me, and the chairman's desk confirmed, that I had to buy a Q class ticket at $927 to be able to use the system wide upgrades.

Both the V and the Q are non-refundable coach tickets. In other words, no difference at all other than price. So a "FREE" systemwide upgrade based on appreciation of frequent patronage just became a $299 upgrade. Also, you can't confirm your upgrade until 7 days in advance.

Did anyone get this memo?

FYI, for all my Flyertalk friends here in MilesBuzz, our new friend here has already demonstrated a flair for the dramatic while knowing little about how the US program actually works ... anyway, see this same thread in the US board for the answers:

Granted, I made an error in judgement and I'm not a junkie like you. I was just asking a simple question, if you would rather critique my knowledge than helping then fine, if it makes you feel better. I'm not sure its constructive but if your trying to prove that you know more than I do about the inner workings of the system then I'll capitulate to that.

congrats.

Marcus, buddy, I would not consider your posts to be a "simple question", I consider them to be "alarmist crap", but please don't take that personally, I'm just talking about your two posts (the one here and the same one in US), not you. Just think about what you're posting, ask it as a question, don't state it as fact, and maybe try the Search feature to see if it has been discussed before (like this issue has, to death), you'll get a lot further.

Mr. Pratt.

What on EARTH are you doing posting this in Miles Buzz for if you already have it in the only Forum that is applicable for this thread topic ... US AIRWAYS.
