Tight IAD Connection: Advice?!?!?!
 

Hey,

I must be crazy but please tell me the chances of making my transfer I am coming in from LHR on Virgin Atlantic 055 @ 8:55 (B Concourse) (I have done it before and its never late, usually earlier) but I have to clear customs and then go get on a United Express (Trans States) 8002 to MDT (Harrisburg) @ 9:45 (A Concourse).......I am only having a carryon so not baggage claim.......What do you think???

Once you deplane, you'll be led directly into one of IAD's infamous "mobile lounges" for the ride to immigration and customs in the main terminal. In my experience, the type of mobile lounge sent to international arrivals uses only one set of doors-- the last ones on will be the first ones out-- but I am not sure if the setup for Virgin at B is different from United at C/D.

After clearing customs and immigration you would take another mobile lounge back to Concourse A for your UX flight. You can also take the underground walkway back to Concourse B, and then walk from Concourse B over the bridge to Concourse A.

Incidentally, MilesBuzz is not the best forum for this type of question; the Washington, DC board would have been the best bet.

I've never done a Virgin to United Express connection at IAD but I have begun or ended enough trips at that airport to have a slightly informed opinion.

Which is that you might make it but the odds are against you. To use a poker analogy, an international connection that tight at that airport is drawing to an inside straight.
