While you have failed to identify which program's miles you are asking about, as a general rule the terms and conditions for each offer do an excellent job of answering your question.

For example:

Account must remain open with minimum funding for 9 months, or TD AMERITRADE may charge the account for the cost of the Starpoints.

I bit on the Ameritrade offer for Starpoints. Wasn't really worth it. For one thing, it was a little tricky getting a decent rate for the invested funds. Their default rate is lousy. And, there is a $50 fee when you close the account. And, while I had the money at AT, they changed the commission on fund purchases and sales from $20 to $50 so it would now be quite costly to go in and out.

It is nice to get bonus miles. ^ But, maybe putting $25K into bonus miles is overkill?

I have played Ameritrade's game three times so far and it has been worth it to me. Read the fine print, as mentioned agove re: how long to keep the money there and the account closure fee. I have moved money back and forth actually over the past couple of years and received 25,000 miles, XM satellite radio and 16 months of subscription, IPad Nano and Bose docking station. It takes a small amount of work but I transfer assets "in kind" from my main brokerage firm, then transfer most but not all back after the minimum time frame and wait for the next offer.

I got in on the CO miles promotion that required the account to remain for 6 mos. The latest promo has it at 9 mos.
