American Airlines Warning - Job Action
 

Pilots are angry over the integration of Reno air and have promised "unspecified job actions" will begin immediately.

I agree. But an airline pilots strike (if one happens) would effect more than just the carrier in question. Travel plans that were tentative should be immediately firmed up to prevent inavailability. Anyone on the fence of buying or of carrier decisions might want to act quickly.

I feel that this was an example of a topic of general concern. Please let me know what the general consensus is.

Here's my read on the topic of postings. The individual groups (United, American, TWA, etc.) are, as specifically indicated, for information on that airlines FREQUENT TRAVELER PROGRAM. If the post isn't specifically about the airlines FF program, I tend to post it under BUZZ. Therefore I think that it is correct that the American Airlines strike info belongs here. IMHO. The Buzz is "Travel News" not "Airline Program".

Actually Catman, I think that's a great idea and as long as you only refer to the post in another catagory, rather than re-posting the entire thing, I don't think that's a "cross-post".

You are correct, PremEx. I considered it a CROSS POST because it was in two forums for the SAME TOPIC.

We do need to control some of the BUZZ by creating a few more forums. It's become more crowded than a SouthWest ticket counter.

A second category under Travel News called "In the News" for postings about mainstream news coverage would seperate them out from "the Buzz". If everyone agrees, we could add it to the suggestion forum.

My understanding is there is no possibility of a strike - infact it would be illegal.

An action is likely to be centered around an overtime ban (source: British Airways).

I wouldn't think a complete American pilot's strike would be possible, either... I base this on the fact that when the American pilots tried this in the past the U.S. President issued some type of "national security directive" ordering these folks back to work. Something about the number of passengers American flies daily and the amount of U.S. mail that American carries.

Apparently the President did not consider the NW pilot strike enough of a national security issue to do anything.

The "no overtime" job action could do enough damage, though. When U.S. Air pilots did this last fall by refusing to work overtime, over 300 flights were cancelled one weekend (the last days in the month). Fortunately I was on another airline.

NJDavid: You'll be interested to note that USAir blamed these cancellations on the weather in the NE... I was in Charlotte during those days and it was the local newspaper / TV that broke the story that the pilots said they refused to work overtime (and basically contradicted USAir's public explanation). The TV station did a report showing USAir monitors and their cancelled flights "due to weather" while other airlines were flying into that same location. The report even went so far as to show why the weather in those markets was clear and "flyable".

I certainly agree with your other post that there needs to be some accuracy (truthfulness) with airlines telling why flights were cancelled / delayed.

Speak of the devil... just read that American cancelled 90 flights at DFW Saturday due to a pilot "shortage". The dispute appears to be over the disparity in pay for Reno and AA pilots.
