Miletracker who uses it?

Is it secure? Seems to be a good idea if it's safe

lisamcgu Mar 7, 2002 5:12 pm

Edited - was an airhead.

I use it , and see no such problems as lisa describes. I just hit mine while reading her message, and see that AA has finally deducted the mileage for my upgrade certs, so hopefully they will arrive soon...

As to safety, according to the author, none of your information gets passed to anywhere other than where it's needed to get your totals (i.e. it just simulates your typing in and cutting and pasting all your totals in). I haven't captured the traffic to verify this, but have no reason to disbelieve.

I have, however, asked (no reply) about the possibility of encrypting the settings file which has all your stuff. That seems crackable if anyone had access - ditto with the constant "program updates". If anyone wanted to steal a bunch of data, he could easily hack the DLL to copy his own servers, and then put out a "program update" so everyone'd have to install it. Again, cryptography here would help - a digitally signed certificate for updates, etc.

Of course, when it comes down to it, I'm sitting here complaining about a utility that I didn't pay for, and use frequently.

I have used Mile Tracker for the last couple of months and have had no problems with it. One nice feature is that it will list all programs for each family member on a single page and update all accounts with one click.

thepilotswife Mar 7, 2002 6:38 pm

I think Mile Tracker is great. I haven't experienced any of the problems lisamcgu has. I use it all the time. I like the way it keeps all family members on one page. I heighly recommend it.

stevelb Mar 7, 2002 7:35 pm

I would actually pay for this program. That's how much I use and like it.

USAFAN Mar 8, 2002 6:37 am

Stevelb:

May be you have to pay sooner than later!

Read this from Miletrackers website:
"Free - I can't promise that it will always be free, but MileTracker currently costs nothing to use."

lisamcgu Mar 8, 2002 5:23 pm

Oh my god!

I am such an airhead!

I was talking about Mile Marker. Sorry, sorry - please disregard all comments.

Randy Petersen Mar 8, 2002 5:56 pm

Ae you sure you are talking about MileMarker. I can't imagine the problems you are referring to here since it is a simple distance calculator that doesn't seem to steal screens when i've used it, it's a page just of itself. Maybe you are thinking of something other than MileMarker?

UAL Traveler Mar 8, 2002 6:11 pm

I've used MileMarker before, and just tested it again in IE6.0 and NS6.2 and it continues to work just fine in both.

lisamcgu Mar 8, 2002 6:57 pm

Just tested it again, its MileMarker.

I was here on FT, and I clicked on the shortcut, and zap, it took the window I was using for FT.

I know some of my shortcuts do this and some don't. Maybe its me when I am making the shortcuts and I'm not defining something or something?

Lisa, when you say that you "clicked the shortcut", do you mean that you clicked the link on an FT page or that you opened the shortcut in a folder/on your desktop? It's probably the latter. If it is and you're using IE, go to the Advanced tab in IE's Internet Options and uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts". I'd be surprised if it's the former since Infopop renders all links with a target of _blank which should work correctly by opening a new window in all browsers ( http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/ht...ges/target.htm ).

P.S. I wrote MileTracker, so I was a little worried when I saw your original problem. Feel free to edit that message so that future readers aren't scared... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I'll post a reply concerning MileTracker's security tomorrow.

Loaded and installed Miletracker.
It's a nice program, it works fine - thanks for the information.

Miletracker rocks, just like Farebrowser! Thank you JimBob! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

lisamcgu Mar 10, 2002 1:23 pm

Jimbob -

thanks so much for all the advise. Don't have time right now to look for the IE advanced options or whatever tab but I did appreciate and take your advise to edit the above MileTracker/Marker post so I don't scare anyone. I'm sorry, sorry, sorry.

Major airhead alert.

smilee Mar 12, 2002 3:51 pm

My faretracker stopped working. Is moonlight labs down or something?

UAL Traveler Mar 12, 2002 5:13 pm

FareBrowser is working fine for me (at least in IE6.0).

fholt Mar 14, 2002 5:52 pm

Jimbob - Do you have your security post readied yet?

Wow - this sounds like a great program. Wish I knew where to download it from. Anybody want to share the secret?

I've never used MileTracker but I do appreciate Fare Browser, which you can find at the same website. It's like a smart DreamMaps.

I recently loaded it. This is one pretty cool program. It keeps track of all your accounts and with one click it can log you onto the web site of the ff program. When you check mileage, it lets you know of any changes since your last check.

DebBrown Jul 7, 2002 8:06 am

Jimbob, is there a way to access FareBrowser? I would love to try it but it has been unavailable through your website for some time now.

I use Miletracker daily and love it. Thanks!

shadow Jul 7, 2002 9:34 am

Deb, here's the link to it.
http://www.moonlightlabs.com/farebrowser.html

There is a message there that states:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Due to problems with my web hosting provider (jumpline.com), FareBrowser is currently unavailable. I am in the process of switching to a better web host at which point FareBrowser will be available again. I apologize for the inconvenience.</font>

I use this program - Miletracker - DAILY! In fact, I learned that I can save a ton of time to access all my freq flyer accounts through Miletracker. It's much quicker than going to that particular site and keying in all the info. It's very useful for people involved in many programs and with our family of 4, and the multiple programs, I can see at a glance what posted and what didn't in mimimal time daily. I check it as often as my email. I need to send another donation! This is truly a HUGE VALUE for no cost to us!!!! Can someone post the link for donations again?

consultingmiles Jul 17, 2002 1:14 pm

I use it for tracking all my miles, and then I go to the following site to see how I can transfer my miles:

http://svr1.rewardcafe.com/calculato...x/currcalc.jsp

Together, they are a great combo!
