No Bonus Points when Using ExpressPay

If you're thinking of using ExpressPay, the contactless payment technology available on new American Express cards such as the Starwood Preferred Guest card, be sure to read this first. I found it in the ExpressPay Terms and Conditions document.

If your ExpressPay is linked to a Card that allows you to earn points or rewards, you will continue to earn them at the standard rate when you use ExpressPay. If your ExpressPay is linked to an American Express Charge or Delta Card where you currently earn double points for Everyday Spend Purchases you will receive double points on all ExpressPay purchases on the linked account. However, if your ExpressPay is linked to another American Express Card product that offers bonus points or points at an increased rate for spending at particular categories of establishments that accept the Card, you will not receive those bonus points or the increased rate when you use ExpressPay.

I didn't think Starwood offered bonus points for spending categories (like "Always Double Miles" on the Delta card), other than at Starwood properties.

Amex Blue Cash (also an ExpressPay card) certainly does.
SPG might in the future.
And in general, the fact that "waving your card" and "swiping your card" are not identical transactions - at least not from a point/mile/cashback accumulation point of view - is rather misleading.

I wonder if this new targeted promotion applies to the ExpressPay restriction

After a recent bad experience with ExpressPay, I've stopped using it. Apparently, if the ExpressPay authorization is having a problem, it will return a "decline" to the merchant instead of a "system problem", regardless of your card status. I don't need that kind of nonsense while standing at a cash register.

This does not make sense to me. First you invest heavily in new technology and then not only do you not give an incentive to get people to use it but actually provide a disincentive for using it.

Out of curiosity, what is the targeted promotion anyway?
