I think with America West stopovers are allowed in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Columbus on most fares. It worked really well on a recent vacation from Vancouver. Flew Vancover to PHX to LAS. Then LAS to PHX, stayed there a week and back to Vancouver. Plus it was cheaper to fly to Las Vegas than it was just to Phoenix

Not coincidentally, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Columbus are America West hubs! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

wow, maybe you can get a stopover in Detroit on NW!!!

Or (gasp) MSP!!

(just kidding -- apologies to people who live or love either city)

Seen lots of newbies around lately so I thought I'd give this a bump.

The way I look for stopovers online on NW or Expedia is to use the multiple destinations option. I can force city pairs to come up this way. Check the roundtrip price, then put some stopovers in, and recheck the price. Often there is very little difference. Be careful on NW, most likely NRT is not an allowable stopover to Asia.

Thanks for the interesting read. I'm trying to do a stopover on AA in Vegas, coming back from Maui. Something like

OGG-SJC-LAS (arrive Sunday)
LAS-ORD-PIT (leave Tuesday)

That way I'm in Vegas on weekdays when it's cheaper. I asked if this is a legal stopover on the American board and got one response that seemed to imply it was.

So with American can you pretty much stopover anywhere in the US?

Eastwest;

Great topic and great thread. There is another, previously unmentioned, way to 'visit' Saudi Arabia, that many current Flyertalkers have probably 'taken advantage' of in our prior lives, military service!!! I enjoyed a six day visit to Jeddah while serving as a officer onboard a Canadian Navy ship serving in a US-led multinational task force operating in the North Red Sea in the early 1990's. Our visit was specifically six days in length to avoid two weekly public executions while maximizing shore leave for our crew. It's too bad that it's so difficult to visit Saudi Arabia. It's one of the most fascinating places I've ever visited and there are thousands of very hospitable westerners living in the expatriate communities of Jeddah and probably every other major Saudi city.

From what I can understand, you cannot visit Saudi Arabia as a regular tourist but have to try hard (transit, package tour etc.). Things are tough if you are a non-Muslim. A number of the 9-11 fanatics had Saudi passports. Why are Visa arrangements between the US and Saudis not reciprocal? If we are so unwanted in their country why can they come at will??</font>
I can answer that in three letters...OIL
