The Price To Paradise Just Doubled
Yesterday it was a minimum of approx $620 RT from DCA, EWR, PHL etc to Honolulu. Two weeks ago the minimum RT fare could be had for $330. Today it is almost $1200 and as usual, all minimum fares are all nestled in a narrow range. Of course you can pay more if all the "cheap seats" are sold out. This should put a crimp in the Hawaii economic recovery program.
Any other destinations gone up as well? Aint yield management (and fare collusion/matching) wonderful? MisterNice |
Yeah, I noticed as of yesterday afternoon, quite a few United fares went up, not as significant as that but the SEA-TUC, went up about 25%.
|
I would look into an air/hotel package. Then you have access to airfares that are lower than published and are negotiated/set far in advance and less likely to fluctuation.

That is truly amazing! The Continental fare that I paid $306 roundtrip (BOS-HNL) for travel 3/2 returning on 3/11 is now $1,240! Wow, talk about inflation!
The lowest I now see for those dates is an AA fare of $842 - still, almost triple what I paid! |
Just FYI, AA has dropped the mileage requirement for the continental U.S. - Hawaii run - it's now 30,000 miles for a coach seat from anywhere in the U.S. to HNL.

Is that drop is mileage a promo, or permament change?

It's just a promo.

Delta has an award seat for 30,000 all the time to Hawaii from anywhere in the US. However if you live in San Diego you are out of of luck.

Part of the increase for HNL has to do with the NFL Pro Bowl Feb 9. That week is booked and expensive. Prices seem to go back down starting the next week
|
I believe this is the snow/cold premium charged to get to warmer climates!
|
If you're going the other way (HI to West Coast), Aloha and Hawaiian started one of those periodic coupon book specials today. 6 coupons for $330 (Hawaiian) or $300 (Aloha), use as per usual for interisland flights, OR exchange the whole book for one coach r/t to the West Coast.
Of course, seat availability to the West Coast is severely limited; I called Hawaiian to try to use this special to get to Vegas in late March, and my dates (and reasonable alternatives) were already sold out. |
The price from HNL>mainland still seems to be quite high, and may have even rose a bit. What gives? I can't find a decent price for anytime in March to get to NYC. Just to think, a few weeks ago I booked 2 tickets, HNL-EWR, for $311 each. Are the airlines trying to make up for their brief "Hawaii sale"? This is ridiculous!
|
The Hawaiian economy is going to take a long time to recover if prices aren't reigned in. With the economy in the state it is in, no one wants to empty their wallets just to get to Hawaii, let alone spend money there afterwards.

A friend sez she booked a Feb trip from DCA-MSP-HNL on NW for about 700 dolla yesterday. She said all the other airlines were 400+ dolla higher.
She also noted the nicest part was she was able to be upgraded to F/C (WBC?) with WP mileage. It certainly beats the HoKeY predatory pricing crap the Continental Crapsters dropped on the NonePass(tm) crowd. MisterNice |
i monitor fares regularly as i am sure many of you flyertalkies do as well. over the past two to three weeks, fares have skyrocketed. airlines cut back on flights and people are now stircrazy (since they didn't travel at all after sept. 11). every flight i have been on in the three weeks has been PACKED PACKED PACKED.
