Getting credit on other airlines for getting bumped [voluntarily] ??

Can one get mileage credit if they are bumped to another airline---I mean this in 2 ways:

1. If I was originally on an American flight and then was put on United [for getting bumped voluntarily] would I still get AAdvantage credit for my original flight on American?

2. If I was originally on an American flight and then was put on United[for getting bumped voluntarily] , could I get UAL Mileage Plus credit?

Thanks

Hi,

The answer is yes you probably can.

In fact i think in this case you will get both miles on the original airline and on the one you actually flew with( If you hold both arilies FF cards).

Keep the boarding passes and tickets as you may have to send them in to one of the airlies to get credit.

In most cases you can. Keep all the paperwork just in case.

If I've read the accounts of FTers who have had this legitimate "double dip" work for them, it seems that the airline that you actually flew on [United] generally automatically credits the miles for the segment(s) you're actually flying as long as you provide the FFP number when you check in. Your original airline [American] might not automatically credit the miles for the segment(s) you were originally scheduled to fly, in which case mailing in a copy of your original ticket and boarding pass, with a letter describing what happened, generally does the trick.

I have "Double Dipped" multiple times. I had a streak in late August where I was getting bumped all the time.

I was bumped on a IAH-STL segment on CTL. I took American IAH-DFW-STL. before I left the CTL gate, I asked the gate agent to put a note in my recored to credit me for the missed segment. Two weeks later it showed up. When I got to the American gate with my voucher, I simply gave the American agent for AAdvantage number. Boom--two segments on American.

I had the same thing two days later.I was bumped STL-ATL-ORF. I asked Delta to give me credit. A week later I got my two segments. DL put me on TWA STL-ORF (and I was in first). I gave TWA my AAdvantage number and got the credit.

I think that there are a lot of us who have done this.

Almost always you will get the miles on the original airline that "bumps" you or cannot acommidate your reservation. I have even received miles for US Airways flights when my flights were canceled and I rented a car and drove home.

I was booked on AA to get home in December. AA cancelled their flights due to weather and then took all us passengers by bus to MSP where we were accomodated on other airlines.
Here are extracts from my letter from AA dated January 2, 2002:

.... and appreciate the fact that you fully intended to travel with us...
We understand that Aadvantage mileage is one reason customers specifically select American Airlines when scheduling their trips and I'm sorry that your plans had to be changed. Nevertheless, it is not our general policy to credit Aadvantage mileage for segments that are not actually flown on American. We feel this is reasonable since we do not receive the revenue for these segments, and since mileage often is credited by the other carrier in its frequent traveler program.
This policy governs canceled flights, misconnections, voluntary oversales, and similar situations in which an originally scheduled American flight is not taken...

blah, blah, blah,

The airlines are going through a very difficult time and maybe the above is a real change in policy. The "other program" is not too relevant. For example, if AA put me on US Airways I will never in my entire life get enough miles to get a free flight from them. I just never use that airline. Same goes for SouthWest.

Yes, you do. The important point here is that there are two different companies. They are NOT one company.

Original airline will manually give you miles because they screwed up. You have to ask, but they do it for customer service since you bought a ticket with them, and they could not follow through. Does not matter if you took a bus, train, taxi, another airline or rental car. Bottom line, they screwed up (or had some problem)

The new airline is carrying you as a paid passenger. They really do not care WHO paid for the ticket, just that you flew with them. Therefore, they will give you credit for the flight as always.

I had bumps from US where I got rerouted. When the credit didn't appea, I e-mailed CS & the miles appeared within 2 days. Contrast with UA where I am trying for the 4th time to get miles credited. They now tell me I have to send in the NW boarding pass (how can I send in the NW boarding pass when NW took the boarding pass to get on their flight!!) along with the UA ticket. Just have to keep calling & insist that they credit me immediately.
