Nice Job, Mikey

My letters are on their way and include a link to this thread. Thanks again for your effort.

I believe this is EXACTLY the right forum for this. Otherwise I and many others would never see it.

I shortened your post, but have to laugh at the part about the French security people being so great. These are the people, who after pulling a guy out of line and getting who knows how many people involved, still let a guy onboard with a bomb in his shoe.

Meanwhile, we do not need MORE security, we need less, along with some smarts.

Well, all I can say is that today's flight was AFTER the shoe-bomber got through. I suspect that procedures may have changed a bit because of that. In any case, the French screeners were quite obviously a cut above the Argenidiots that we have to deal with day in and day out.

I'm back to the airport January 9 for a no-standing Shuttle flight to DCA. What silliness.

I read the other thread proposing this and think it's a great idea. But I was surprised in reading Mikey's letter. While it raised the detail behind the problem very well, it didn't clearly spell out the problem itself. The length of the delays in the name of "security," particularly when combined with fewer available direct flights since the airlines cut routes, makes it more time-effective for the frequent business traveler to drive to many destinations. This, as we know, has a serious ripple effect for all of us: the airlines, the tax payers who bailed them out, and even the leisure travellers who will see fares increase to cover the losses.

I can read between the lines here and see what Mikey is saying. But I think it might be helpful to be more explicit about the problem in trying to get the media to write about it. Grandma and Grandpa may not care that it takes them at least an extra hour or two cooling their heels in airports if they feel safer, but for business travellers, time is money. Combine the time factor with the hassle factor and driving becomes the clear alternative for destinations to which we would ordinarily fly.

Edit: forgot the flyertalk convention of bolding the name of posters referred to in the message.

Holly,

Excellent response. I tend to rant. I am not a writer.

(And I can't spell worth a ****.....RANDY, ADD A SPELLCHECKER TO FLYERTALK http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif )

But, I posted the letter here to get you and all of the other FTers to write, call, visit their friendlly neighborhood reporters...and NOW..President, Vice President, Congressmen etc.

We need to be listened to....

Some of my experiences from recent travels:

- Sept. 16. At check in, asked about knives, pointed objects, etc. At security, giant sign saying no knives of any sort. At Presidents Club, whole big tray of metal knives (plastic, too).

- Dec. 18. Get randomly selected. (Dreaded S.) Get wanded while standing next to a big metal partition. Beeps all over the body. Guard: "Oh, don't worry, it's just the partition."

- Dec. 18. Get randomly selected again. As I'm walking up to the gate, I hear my name in a long list followed by instructions to go to the screening. In theory I might not have heard it. Walk on the plane. No problem. No reconciling the list against who actually went up to get screened.

- Dec. 19. Again randomly selected. Huge line at the gate. Getting toward departure time. They rush through the last 5-10 passengers, not even bothering to open the carry ons.

The thing that's laughable about the random security screenings is that you're warned in advance ... maybe i'm smarter than the average terrorist, but if I were intending to do something evil and had contraband, I would bolt as soon as I saw the S.

Nice post mikey1003. I wish the clowns with the dirty rubber gloves would change them when they resemble the camophlage uniforms the bored NG guys wear. Phew!

I had the Dreaded S for the first time on my way to PHX and my wife got it on our way home. We had a lot of crap with us since we we brought our 2yr old son. Each time we just packed up the non-S with all the crap and walked up to security with no carry-ons.

If five terrorists were boarding a aircraft now, why wouldn't they just do what my wife and I did? Answer, they would.

Yes, security is a joke, but unfortunately, the jokes on us.

I thought your writing was just fine... terrific actually. Been following your thoughts on this for awhile. Just wanted to advise, particularly if others are following suit, to start with what those journalist folks call a lead -- an opening paragraph that's sexy enough to grab 'em so they'll actually cover this. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I applaud your efforts. I'm writing my elected representatives, but am not comfortable with being quoted so I'll leave the press to those of you who don't share my reluctance.

Good work, mikey. Hope I'm not the only one to join your call to arms. And I'll second the call for a spell checker... even a preview would help me. I swear I never find my typos until I see the thing without UBB code in it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
