Sun Country - Are they done?

I read somewhere that Sun Country has cancelled all of its flights. Are they going out of business?

duxfan Dec 26, 2001 12:08 pm

they cancelled all their "scheduled service", and are reverting to their charter roots.

Mikey Dec 26, 2001 12:13 pm

Thanks for the clarification. I flew their scheduled service this past summer, and it was OK. Did not like the Hubert Humphrey terminal in MSP though.

duxfan Dec 26, 2001 12:41 pm

i never flew them, but bought tickets on them when i took clients to vegas from milwaukee. my travel agent said they were almost impossible to work with, and told me she would never put someone on them that didn't specifically ask.

Mikey Dec 26, 2001 1:06 pm

Wow - that's not exactly a ringing endorsement. I flew them because I had a free ticket from MCI. Got it for switching long distance.

duxfan Dec 26, 2001 1:10 pm

its too bad, because they really put price pressure on NW up in MSP

Shinkansen Dec 26, 2001 1:23 pm

I flew Sun Country once and had quite a poor experience. I never flew them again and now I am paying for it. When Sun Country was flying MSP to LAX, the fare on NW was $211. Since Sun Country has stopped operations? The fare on NW is $311. Hmmmm...

My sole experience (hardly an adequate sample)led me to conclude the employees just never stopped acting like thay were herding college students on charters to Mexico for spring break.

only $311? sounds like NW is easing you back into higher prices. while i'd support a good quality lowfare carrier with my business, it sounds to me like SY expected customers to trade price for service and quality. there are a few low fare carriers who give you that.

hope you'll try airtran out of MSP when you get the chance. they went thru some real pains in the post-valujet days, but they are a good little airline now!

Mikey Dec 26, 2001 1:31 pm

Yup - the price gouging kinda stinks.

FLYDCA Dec 27, 2001 8:06 am

Yes the price moderating pressure on NW in MSP is now gone. Flights from IAD to MSP with no Saturday stay could be had for $175 roundtrip on either Sun Country or NW prior to the demise of Sun Country. Now the lowest non-stop weekday fare in this market is $600++

I would definetly agree. The price to Vegas with a 30 day advance purchase is now $306, what a rip-off. In the past I would fly either airline to Vegas, depending on the schedule, price was pretty close and much cheaper. Now I don't have a choice, I either pay a higher price or make a connection.

this story has some interesting details of how Sun Country has left a trail of bad debts across the country and really screwed over their employees.

Well, what did you expect when an airline is on the brink of going out of business? If there isn't enough money in the bank, writing a check to vendors, hotels, and employees for accrued vacation would be a waste of time.

"... really screwed over their employees" sounds like a statement coming from NW itself. I guess you're happy the bad ol' Sun Country is gone, huh?

what else would you call it? i guess i treat my employees better than you would. i would hazard a guess that the handwriting was on the wall at SY for some time, and still the management did nothing to help protect the employees. and it's not like they were doing anymore than protecting what had been promised to them. sounds like a great place to work.
