Earn miles for award tix?!
Just checked my HP account. I recieved mile for an award ticket, which was I was upgraded both ways, & recieved the class of service bonus.
Just checking, I though/assumed reward tixkets weren't eligible. Anyone have this happen lately, anywhere? I was trying to burn up all my HP miles, now it looks like I got a lot more magizine subscriptions to give out.... |
They are not, but you sometimes get lucky and receive miles.
Usually, reward tickets are not valid for free elite upgrades. However, my experience has shown that you're more likely to get miles if you receive a elite upgrade on the award ticket since it changes the fare code that you're on. ------------------ daniel baker -- [email protected] Reliable, fast, and unmoderated forums at ITYT. |
I had this happen once on a United ticket, where I made a flight change with telephone reservations upon arrival back in the U.S. from London (wanted to get the next flight out rather than waiting a couple days). The check-in agent could not find the change, and somehow checked me in as a fare-paying passenger.

I have on occasion received full first-class credit on an upgraded coach (economy, to our European friends) ticket. It's nice when it happens, but I don't base my award redemption or elite qualification plans on it.
(Before someone tells me that these bonus miles don't count toward elite status, AA has an alternative qualification scheme in which you receive more credit for paid front cabin.) |
Funny about this post... I was just checking my partner's AA statement that just arrived... and he received partial mileage credit for an award ticket.
He received credit for segments he flew where he had been rerouted due to missing a connection in DFW from OGG. William |
It must be when the agent books you into a non-award fare letter code class. i.e. Y instead of like Z.

If you use Hilton points for an AA award ticket - you WILL get miles.
CO and NW will upgrade for free award ticket elites on a space available basis - but no miles. |
Got miles on NW once...surprised the heck out of me.

Reward tkts: do you mean the reward tkts from airlines or rewards tkts from Hotel points.
I heard that some of the airlines actually look at Hotel award tkts as just plain old tkts and they give you elite qualifying miles for them. ------------------ Regards, Al |

That happened to me this summer as well. I booked an award on TWA using my HP miles (when you still could), and I got credit for all 4 segments. It proably had something to do with the fact that I booked the trip in F since Y was not available on the dates I needed. The miles didn't count towards elite status though (no biggie there - I re-qulified for PLAT in July).
