Carry-on/security question -- wine and beer bottles OK?
Has anyone had any problems getting through security with full, unopened wine and beer bottles in their carry-on bags? The FAA doesn't mention bottles as a prohibited item ...

I have also been asked open bottles and take a drink, or if I had food to take a bite.
I know in ATL there is a large sign at the security checkpoint now stating " No outside food or drink past this point" |
I have had no problem carrying bottles of wines/other drinks as carry on.
I had 5 bottles yesterday as my carry-on on my flight back from Spain and last week I had a bottle of sake from my trip to Japan and I brought it in as a carry on. I do not think they (FAA) can not prohibit bottled drinks as many people buy bottled drinks at duty free shops and bring them into the airplane. |
I was told to drink from my coke in Tampa but it was in my hand.
They won't make you open a closed bottle of wine in your carry on and drink, will they???!! |

So, it's the liquid that's the concern.
They took my hotel sewing kit last week. What would threaten you more, a sewing kit or a broken wine bottle? Don't they realize the harm they are doing with these crazy rules? People aren't flying because they don't want to put up with the crap at the airports! |
Went on US Airways from National Airport on Thursday last week with 3 bottles of wine. I had to show them to the security guy who handled each bottle but said OK. Don't remember if I also had a water bottle. 2 weeks ago, I took a packed lunch at Baltimore and they did not even open the bag. No food by the airlines, you can't bring your own, even though the airlines want you to do so. That is what makes me upset.

Are the new breed of terrorists going to poison a Big Mac and force everyone in the crew to take a bite? Although, that does remind me of people in the AA forum saying they've been bringing cookies to the flight crew as a thank-you. I guess you could poison the cookies and just hope that most of the crew would eat one, at which point you could easily take over the plane. d |
I always have at least one bottle of wine in my carry-on, and often more. I'd say about 50% of the time the security screener asks to have a look. They inspect the seal on the cork and that's all. No problems. Never been asked to open it (yeech).
I also bring a small bottled water and have never had them ask to inspect that for some reason. Never been asked to "take a drink" of anything, but I have seen others have to do it. |
The security people, right or wrong, view bottles of liquid as a risk. What if it were filled with kerosene, turpentine, etc? LAX and LAS come to mind as being quite particular about this issue. They have inspected my bottles of wine/liquor to make sure they were sealed. Also, in LAS, I was drinking a 12 oz. bottle of Crystal Geyser water. The security guard would not let me past the checkpoint with the open bottle.

They stopped me in CLE last week with four bottles of wine in the carryon. She first did a residue test of the strap and zipper, and pulled out two of the bottles to inspect(different shapes). That was all.
(At BWI the week before, I sent my caesar salad container through x-ray--wonder what they thought of that!) |
i have only had to 'take a drink' if I was passing through security with an 'pre-security opened container'...in other words, if I was drinking it before security they want you to take a taste, if unopened they trust that the contents in the bottel are what is labled and don't have to be opened....I usually have a bottle of water in my carryon which they have never bothered me about, but if I am holding an open one it is always 'please take a drink...'

We fly NWA most often but have never been so much as even questioned about any wine opened or not.
