Getting discounts by ticketing overseas -- experience?

I just read Rudi's RTW account, and I noticed that he paid the equivalent of US$300 less for his RTW ticket by buying it in Switz.

Is there any way that we in the US can take advantage of price differences like this, or are fares generally converted automatically from the US dollar? If not, maybe now is the time to buy tickets in Brazil?

you can indeed often profit from buying outside your country. the main problem is, that in most cases you have to START your journey in that country if you want to profit from the local prices - otherwise you will be charged the $-equivalent of the price.

star1, Buy a RT to Brazil with the return about 2 weeks later. When there, buy a RTW, originating and returning to Brazil. then return home on the backend of your ticket.
don't know if you's save $$, but you could do it.

If, for example, you want to go from the US to Bali, the Maldives, or Phuket, it would be susbtantially less expensive to buy a R/T ticket to Hong Kong and then, when you get here, buy your intra-Asia tickets. This is not always the case if, for example, Cathay is having one of their promotions.

It's frequently cheaper to buy tickets originating in Bangkok. I fly to Thailand a couple times a year. I bought one one-way ticket from SEA-BKK, $1189 in business class, then a bunch of round-trip tickets from BKK-SEA. At the time you could buy a first-class RT ticket for $2300 becuase of the currency crash. Those days are gone, but it's still cheaper.
