Trouble with the new system....

This is baobab...

Oh no!!

The profile thingie wouldn't let me show my e-mail address, as it's already in use by another user (one of Rudi's ghosts...), so I changed it to [email protected], assuming that everyone would be smart enough to take the nospam part out before e-mailing me.

Now the server tells me that it's automatically changing my password and will send the new one to my 'new' e-mail address!

Aargh!!!

Now I can't make any posts!!!

roberto Jan 17, 1999 7:20 am

baobab again:
I know that Merry Flyer is having similar problems...

NJDavid Jan 17, 1999 8:54 am

I for one am disapointed that the messages that were posted right after the crash are missing.

Everyone was feeling SOOOOOO alone, and someone was posting "no flights today" messages on all the airlines.

My profile seems to work OK though.

Dave

Michael at WebFlyer Jan 17, 1999 8:55 am

This is just to let everyone know that the email situation is not a problem with the new version of this board.

We opted to turn off the public display of all email addresses as we felt some people might not appreciate having their email address displayed for the whole world to see.

The displaying of email addresess makes it easier for harvesting and spaming. However, seeing as we've never had a complaint about it and we seem to be having many objections to the present situation I'm going to go ahead and turn them back on.

Please continue to test our board and give us this feedback so we have an idea as to what needs fixing and/or improved. Thank you all very much for your wonderful and kind encouragement.

It seems that the cookies are working and that unread forums are highlighted OK but it looks like all the light bulbs (for unread new messages in forums) go off after reading the first unread forum. This way you can't easily find the next unread forum. I thought in the old version the light bulbs for all unread forums stayed on (even after you had read each forum) until you exited Flyertalk .

Michael!! - this is baobab.

I need you to assign me a new password and e-mail it to [email protected]. I can't make any postings!

(Merry was kind and told me the password for his creation 'baobad', but I want to be myself again...)

BlondeBomber Jan 17, 1999 11:03 am

Remember you can e-mail Michael at [email protected].

baobad Jan 17, 1999 2:51 pm

Merry & I have both e-mailed the Webmaster, but since it's Sunday, I don't expect anything to be done until tomorrow.

Losing one's identity is *horrible* http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

BlondeBomber Jan 17, 1999 3:50 pm

My light bulbs seem to be working fine now.

BlondeBomber Jan 17, 1999 3:53 pm

Have you really lost your identity Baobab? I tried to modify my profile but it said it wouldn't let me (the using same e-mail address error came up) and I just left everything the way it was and went back. It seemed to create a new cookie anyway and allowed me to change my preferences. It still won't let me edit my profile though (still get the e-mail address the same error message).

baobad Jan 17, 1999 5:21 pm

I was stubborn, BlondeBomber - it wouldn't let me edit my profile (in order to show my e-mail address), so I changed my address to [email protected], in the hope that it would allow me to show that.

Lo and behold, this was permitted, but (after I'd made the change), Webflyer told me that it was automatically going to change my password and would send the new password to my 'new' e-mail address.

Of course, baobabnospam is a made-up address, so my new password is bouncing about in the ethernet limbo, and I can't access myself.

Let this be a warning to others....

Merry Jan 18, 1999 1:49 am

'Merry Flyer' is still resting. It would appear that there is a space in his e-mail address viz nikmerry@ aol.com.

FlyerTalk obviously doesn't like the space, when I ask it to e-mail me my password it throws a fit and comes back with "Iternal Server Error".

I miss 'Merry Flyer' and 'Merry Flyer' misses all of you.
Nick

PS: Michael, please bring me back to life.

NJDavid Jan 18, 1999 1:52 am

Anyone know what happened to Noah? maybe he has the missing names on his ark.....

Rudi Jan 18, 1999 10:09 am

my actual problems are:

I can't change my "Rudi" profile anymore. When I try, I get the message: the email-address is already used by another member. And so I can still post under "Rudi" - but I can't change the profile, and I can' "automate" Rudi as the "sender".

I have still my second name "IDUR" with another email address (the yahoo-one).

I thought that one of my options would be:

free my yahoo-email-address for "Rudi", by giving IDUR an "out of space/imaginary email-address", and then changing Rudi's email address to the yahoo-one (but chosing the no-show-email-address-option, because I prefer to get emails on my longterm traditional email address). But I can't - when I try now to give IDUR an imaginary email-address the system responds that I try to hack around...

BlondeBomber Jan 18, 1999 11:06 am

Sorry can't help you on this thread Baobab/bad but check your e-mail and you will hear some good news.

baobad Jan 18, 1999 11:48 am

Thanks BB - I have read your e-mail and there is much jubilation... Thank you!

NJDavid Jan 18, 1999 12:11 pm

Hey, Hey!

If you're going to "go private" on us don't rub our noses in it. Now we're all curious...

baobad Jan 18, 1999 12:39 pm

BlondeBomber is Super Elite in Air Canada's Aeroplan, and helped me to resolve a long-running feud I've had with them regarding missing miles.

I've just been credited over 4000 miles, thanks to BlondeBomber's efforts on my behalf.

Okay?

(I think a little gratitude is in order... so I'm being suitably grateful)

I thought only cats were that curious, NJDavid... perhaps you can be an assistant Cat Co-Cop, as you're showing a natural talent for it http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

KatW Jan 18, 1999 1:00 pm

baobad -- has a certain je ne sais quoi, nu?!

NJDavid Jan 18, 1999 1:09 pm

"perhaps you can be an assistant Cat Co-Cop, as you're showing a natural talent for it"

Wouldn't asking about private e-mail being posted be against the omni police?

baobad Jan 18, 1999 1:11 pm

KatW - please e-mail me!!!

(Yes, yes, NJDave, I'm wandering off again)

[email protected]

baobad Jan 18, 1999 1:45 pm

Kat - you'll have to type in my e-mail address, as I've changed the one in baobad's profile to something other than [email protected] , in an attempt to regain my true identity. The new improved version of FT won't let two contributers have the same e-mail address. So I'm using an old address for baobad, but I don't check it very often... I just found some unread messages from october there!

Catman Jan 18, 1999 1:56 pm

Sometimes when I try to e-mail friends (Baobab and Merry for example) from FlyerTalk
I get the messages bounced back saying "System administrator... can't send, etc."

Is it because they are having problems with their registrations here?

OMNI for NJDavid: The next time I go out of town you are welcome to be the co-cat-cop in CMDR CATCOP's absense (4-01 to 4-04 to help Holly
celebrate her Birthday in Naw Or'Lins (New Orleans!) I'll also be off line 2-22 to 2-23
to see Jimmy Buffett at MSG. I'll be happy to deputize you!

Be nice to the CatCOps... They are a direct
relation to your's truly. CATMAN

baobad Jan 18, 1999 2:03 pm

Yes Catman - baobab's email address is [email protected] - the nospam part is nonsense, and you have to take it out to make it work.

baobad Jan 18, 1999 2:04 pm

I think 'Merry Flyers' address has a space that shouldn't be there.

FT assigned us new passwords, which it sent to those addresses, and now we can't access them.

baobad Jan 18, 1999 2:59 pm

BTW, KatW - if you're tempted to make any changes to your profile, don't. FlyerTalk now automatically assigns you a new password, and e-mails it to you.

This is fine if your e-mail works, but Merry and I have both had problems with it - he has an unnecessary space in his address, and I included nospam in mine - so our mail bounces.

Your new password will be sent to young KatW of aol...

baobad Jan 18, 1999 2:59 pm

Of course, you could always change your profile to reflect your own a-mail address...

KatW Jan 18, 1999 3:04 pm

baobad -- Ahah, by george I think I've got it. And, wouldn't that be a shock for good ol' KatW at aol?!

baobad Jan 18, 1999 3:12 pm

Indeed....

Nick has a new friend now!

JAWS_II Jan 18, 1999 3:42 pm

Catman is really a "Parrothead"? How can parrots and cats get along? Have some fun Catperson, and get deep into Margaritaville for Ol' JAWs.

JAWS_II Jan 18, 1999 3:55 pm

I still want the FlyerTalk clock fixed!!! It's really bugging me.

baobab Jan 18, 1999 3:56 pm

I'm back I'm back I'm back

Tee hee hee, whoo hoo and all that.

THANK YOU MICHAEL!!!

Michael at WebFlyer Jan 18, 1999 4:04 pm

You're very welcome baobab.

Catman Jan 19, 1999 2:22 pm

A big thanks from CATMAN for helping all of us get our wires and programs in order, Michael.

A special OMNI to JAWS and anyone else who's interested: Parrot is delicious with a Corona. I love to look at birds. My cats love to ... I won't say what with birds.

Counting the days to Buffett and a trip to Margaretaville (SP?) I'm taking the next day off to rest from all that music and partying!
CATMAN
