Clearing security w/o boarding pass & ticket?
 

Since this related to Randy's Mileage Run, I figure this is vaguely miles related....

Randy arrives in LGW on Friday morning, and I'd very much like to go out to the airport to welcome him. Randy, however, is not planning on coming groundside, since he doesn't want to clear customs. With his itinerary, probably not a bad choice.

I'm not travelling tomorrow, so don't have a ticket or boarding pass. I realise that I can buy a refundable ticket when I get there in a worst-case scenario, but would prefer to use a "security pass" of the type they issue to the parents of unaccompanied minors.

Are these still being issued post-9/11? Does anyone know what the procedure is to secure one? USAirways customer relations were unhelpful, as was the USAirways press office -- well, more clueless than unhelpful. The res. agent here in the UK said that it would probably be possible, the one in the US wasn't sure.

Given that Randy's flight arrives at 5:55am, I'd like to know for sure before setting off.

On a related note, if you had been travelling more or less non-stop for a week, what sort of "welcome kit" would be most welcome? I don't want to bring along anything Randy has to lug around with him, but thought a "care-package" -- maybe some fresh fruit, juice, etc -- would be a nice surprise.

Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure how closly security examines tickets, but you could try to 'write up' your own fictious e ticket confirmation. Most of the one's I receive (legit ones I mean), via e mail look as though they can be reproduced easily. I was just in transit from ARN through LGW to EWR, and all I had was my CO e ticket confirmaton & my passport for security and I had no problem. A lot of people check in at the airport lounges, so I'm pretty sure you may be able to get up there to meet with Randy.

Have you ever by chance been able to clear security post 9-11 in EWR with no BP, mauld? Seems they have been requesting that everyone possess one - at least at the Term C / CO gates area.

i heard people getting "gate passes" from their airline, ie USAIR. Wouldn't that work?

Doc, actually this past weekend on my EWR to LGW, all I had was an e ticket and didn't get my boarding pass until I was at the gate for boarding. In London I wasn't 'thru ticketed' ARN-LGW-EWR, and again all I had was an e ticket confirmation for LGW-EWR & my passport... and no problem.

As to getting through the security, it would depend ont he airline and airport. At United in Newark on Friday for example, everybody had to stop and get either a boarding pass or a gate pass from a United Agent (those checking in at the gate had an express line to get them), your e-ticket and ID were not good enough to get through. You had to show it to an agent before going through security, and two steps later had to show it to the New Jersey State Police once you cleared security.

I really wouldn't be faking an e-ticket paper now.

I'm in a similar situation this evening at AUS and am just planning on going to the Continental ticket counters and explaining the situation (with my gold elite card) and hoping that they'll give me a pass or something similar to what they give parents seeing their kids off.

After much discussion with USAirways, it turns out that an airside pass can be arranged, but you need to be escorted the entire time by a member of staff.

Having said that, Randy is coming groundside at LGW, so it's a bit of a non-issue.

Still trawling for "care package" ideas.

I've already promised Randy a traditional English breakfast!

I can't imagine a worse suggestion these days than to try to fake your way through security, unless, of course, you're trying for frequent interrgoation (and prison?) miles.

I would call the RCC and ask them about getting to the club for a meeting to see if they have anything set up.
